Chess boxing is an hybrid sport, which means that it involves two "opposite" disciplines. It consist of several alternating rounds between chess (blitz games) and boxing, so you can win or lose in various ways and you have to be prepared not just physically but also mentally.

A brief description.

What the sport is about?

It's standard professional match that consists of 11 alternating rounds, specifically six rounds of rapid chess (each lasting 4 minutes) and five rounds of boxing (each lasting 3 minutes). Furthermore, between the rounds of chess and boxing, the fighters are granted a 1-minute recovery period in their corner. This cycle continues until the match is decided. The true challenge lies in the "recovery phase," where athletes must stabilize their heart rate while transitioning from the adrenaline of the ring to the complex calculations required on the chessboard in mere seconds. If a player checkmates or knock out the opponent during the match, the game concludes immediately and that player is declared winner. There are other things to consider if you or someone intends to practice this sport, it is essential to review the requirements mentioned in the following box.

  • By Decision: If the chess game ends in a draw, the judges' boxing scores determine the winner. Moreover, if the scores also result in a tie, the player with the dark pieces is awarded the victory.

Where does it comes from?

The begginings of chess boxing are quite confusing. In 1992, a frech artist, Enki Bibal, published a comic that showed this game in a non-real world. However, before the comic was released and published, there were mentions of this sport that could have inspired Bibal, such as the movie "Mystery of Chesboxing" or the song "Da Mystery of Chessboxing". At the end, the dutch artist Iepe Rubingh, brought this sport to live, which was only represented in images, adapting the idea in 2003 with new rules and competitions

Objective:

Research an unusual sport or hobby, understand its history and characteristics to create an interactive leaflet that includes short videos of the team explaining the topic.

  • Official rules: The ring, chessboard, clock and all the equipment in general is required due to the rules of the sport.

Chessboxing is a special sport that mixes chess and boxing in 11 alternating rounds. Players think fast during the chess round and fight with strength in the boxing round. They use boxing gloves, helmets, and other protection for safety, and a chessboard and clock for the chess game. This sport needs both mental strategy and physical skills, so athletes must switch quickly between calm thinking and active fighting. People enjoy watching chessboxing because it is exciting, different, and combines intelligence with action. In our opinion, we would like to practice chessboxing because it is "a fun challenge". We think it helps to improve both mind and body. Also, it would teach us to stay calm while also being active. Furthermore, we believe it is an unique sport, and trying something different like this would be interesting and motivating for us.
