ITALIAN SCHOOL SYSTEM

The Education in Italy is divided into levels.

The education is compulsory for children aged between 6 and 16 years.

Before the age of 6, children can attend the pre-school. Although it is not compulsory, 90% of the Italian children go to pre-schools (kindergarten).

Day-care centres are available for children before the age of 3.

COMPULSORY EDUCATION

Primary school Age 6–10

lower Secondary school Age 11–14 1^ EQF Level

upper Secondary school two years Age 14–16  2^ EQF Level

Primary school, scuola primaria, lasts five years.

The aim of primary school is to promote a basic cultural education and to encourage social interaction.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

Class sizes generally run about 20 or more pupils per class.

At the beginning of the first year of each school level (elementary, middle, high school), pupils are split up into class groups which will be the same for several years.

Pupils have always lessons in the same classroom, where the different teachers turn over.

LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION

The lower secondary school, is the Scuola Media (Middle School).

It provides students a common general education

It is compulsory and lasts three years.

The main objectives of this level of education is to offer pupils both a wider knowledge of reality through the different school subjects and the opportunity to develop their personality.

The curriculum includes: Italian, English, French (sometimes Spanish or German), History, Geography, Math, Physical Education, Technology, Music, Art, Information Technology, Science and Religion (students can choose to attend different activities instead of Religion).

Students must pass an exam and get the Licenza di Scuola Media (the lower Secondary school diploma- ) before moving up to Upper Secondary schools

High Secondary school lasts five years, until students are eighteen or nineteen years old.

High Secondary schools are voluntary (except for the first two years). Students must make a choice about their education at an early age and choose the high secondary school they will attend.

UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION

Students attend two compulsory years (biennio) of general studies followed by three years (triennio) of specialised education. At the end students get a "State Examination" to certificate the level achieved.

Students can choose among these types of schools

Classical High School (Liceo Classico) It lasts five years and prepares the student for university level studies. Latin, Greek and Italian literature form an important part of the curriculum. During the last three years Philosophy and History of Art are also studied.

Scientific High School (Liceo Scientifico)Lasts five years with an emphasis on Physics, Chemistry and Natural Sciences. Students also continue to study Latin and one modern language

LICEO

Fine Arts High School (Liceo Artistico)Studies can last four or five years and prepare for university studies in painting, sculpture or architecture

Liceo scienze umane economico sociale

Liceo linguistico foreign languages

STUDIES LAST FIVE YEARS AND PREPARE FOR BOTH UNIVERSITY STUDIES AND FOR A VOCATION

  • 3th year examination for 3^ EQF Level
  • 4th year examination for 4^ EQF Level

The school year usually starts around  the middle of September and finishes at about  the middle of June.

There are about 33 weeks of school.

STRUCTURE  OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

Erasmus+ project “ I.C.T. Inclusion, Clil, Technologies” took inspiration by the need “ Da Vinci- Ripamonti” school has to open its doors to Europe and experience an exchange of good practices necessary to enable students to fit into a transnational context both while learning and in the future.

The project “ ICT” involved the mobility for 19 teachers, two employees and the Principal. The participants were selected with accuracy so as to form a group of people willing to keep on training abroad, in different European countries ( England, Holland, Spain, Malta, Ireland, Finland) about topics and issues fundamental to our school. The amount we have been granted was equal to € 50.542,00.

Over the following two years we were able to be trained in methods and strategies to include all our students, particularly our foreign students coming from different parts of the world; we were trained to use a foreign language while teaching technical and vocational subjects supported by technologies which can make our teaching more effective and successful. The project included an exchange of good practices with European schools (Job Shadowing): a group of teachers, some in September 2017 and some others in October 2017, took part in some classes with their Spanish colleagues as to observe different teaching methods and exchange ideas and suggestions. Our partner was the Spanish Institute IES “ Tirant Lo Blanc” of Valencia, Gandia, whose courses of studies are very similar to ours.

Call 2016

KA2 - S.P.A.R.E. - Call 2016

Erasmus + KA2 project named "S.P.A.R.E." written together with seven other European schools, involved training and experimentation courses for both teachers and students. Teachers were trained in the method of peer observation ("teachers observing teachers") while students were trained in the method of debate which develops the ability to support opinions and ideas. During the two years of the project, teachers and students experimented with the method of debate in a foreign language and participated in various international meetings to meet with colleagues from other countries. An International Training Course entitled “We debate” was in our school in the last few weeks. Experts from the Regional School Office of Milan and the “Mosè Bianchi” school of Monza gave conferences on Clil and the method of debate to 40 participants from different countries. At the end of the project, all students took part in an international debate competition in Cyprus.

DEBATE MOTHODOLOGY

The Erasmus+ Vet project called ECT: European Citizen Training responded to the need of increasing students’ competitiveness and the school’s internationalization level. The project involved the mobility of 26 students attending the third and fourth classes and 10 teachers. Some students of Transport and Logistics, Fashion, Maintenance of Means of Transport, carried out internships of four weeks at companies of partner countries: France, Spain; Finland. The teachers involved in the project carried out one week of Job Shadowing activities at the hosting schools and accompany students at the hosting companies. The project lasted two years and gave students the possibility to enhance their technical-professional and cross-sectorial competencies. The teachers involved in Job Shadowing activities took part in classes with foreign colleagues to exchange good practices. The accompanying teachers supervised students’ activities, interacted with companies and compared IIS Da Vinci Ripamonti's internship procedures and documentation with the hosting schools’ ones.

KA1 VET – ECT: European Citizen Training - Call 2018

KA1 – STEaM - Call 2020

The KA1 "STEaM - Styling Teaching Environment and Methodologies" project aims to improve the professionalism of teachers and the quality of the school system and aims to increase: - the use of innovative and creative teaching and ICT; - the level of knowledge of the English language; - the use, in teaching, of the innovative laboratories our Institute is equipped with; - knowledge of Project Cycle Management and other educational systems. The project includes 52 activities divided into 19 Structured Courses and 7 Good Practice Exchanges that will involve the Teachers, including the Principal, his management staff and the Director of General and Administrative Services. The Courses, which will be held in English, will be held in 11 European countries, divided as follows: - Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Cyprus, Portugal and Malta, for the Structured Courses on innovative methodologies and 3.0 laboratories; - Norway, Sweden, Iceland for study visits; - Ireland for the English language courses and Holland for the Human Resource Management course for the Principal and one of her collaborators.

KA2 - STUDENTS ON THE MOVE IN EUROPE - CALL 2020

The main theme of the Students on the Move in Europe project is to find innovative approaches in education to increase the physical activity of students and staff members during school days and in this way increase the ability to work and study both for students and staff members. Well-being during study hours affects the ability of young people to study (Syväoja 2016) and to have energy in everyday life. Physical activity promotes peaceful and concentrated behaviour during lessons (Finnish Schools on the Move program). Especially this is recognized among hyperactive young people or those who have difficulty concentrating. The main expected results are the exchange of good practices to promote well-being and physical activity and innovations for functional learning methods. The project aims to achieve the following results:

  • raise awareness, both for students and staff members, of the importance of physical activity for study and work;
  • promoting cultural change to foster well-being in participating organizations;
  • create concrete learning tools to be used to increase the physical activity and well-being of students and also staff members during school days.

Six students and four teachers from each participating organization took part in the project. The project involved three schools: Italian, Finnish and Slovenian. The project finished in 2023.

KA2 - ACME- CALL 2023

The IIS Leonardo Da Vinci Ripamonti institute is a partner with other European schools in the Erasmus+ KA220 project called ACME (Advanced Car Mechanics Education) lasting two years. The lead school that coordinates the activities is the “IES La Marxadella” institute in Torrent (Spain). With the development of this project it will be possible to have access to a substantial improvement in the professional, theoretical and practical training of students who will have the opportunity to train in other schools throughout Europe. Goals With the implementation of this project we want to introduce innovation in VET (Vocational education Training) courses through the improvement of teaching and the sharing of training between schools across Europe. Another important aspect that we will address is facilitating inclusion and the gender gap: this sector is strongly dominated by the male presence and we want to give visibility to all those women who work in this field.

ACCREDITATION KA120

  • In 2020, the IIS Leonardo Da Vinci Ripamonti Institute obtained approval from the European Commission for a seven-year Erasmus + KA120 project, called Accreditation.
  • The project will involve teachers and students of the third and fourth grades who will go to partner schools in Finland, Spain, Holland, France and Iceland where they will attend classes for two weeks, confronting themselves with the host countries' educational system, culture, and lifestyles.
  • Teachers will be engaged in observation activities and sharing of good practices. The objectives of the project include improving the linguistic, scientific-mathematical, technical and computer skills of students, increasing the digital inclusion of Bes students, and increasing the level of digital citizenship and attention to sustainability.
