What do you think these numbers (-100 to 60) represent?
Discussion Question
Graph Source: NOAA
Why is altitude on the verticle axis?
In most graphs, the independent variable is placed on the horizontal axis. In atmospheric graphs, altitude is shown vertically to match the structure of the atmosphere. Altitude is still the independent variable because temperature changes as altitude changes.
Altitude (km)
Does temperature change because altitude changes, or does altitude change because temperature changes?
