Gli ebrei nell’Impero ottomano tra XIX e XX secolo
Alla fine dell’Ottocento nell’Impero ottomano vivevano circa 314.000 ebrei, di cui un terzo nella area europea. La maggioranza era di origine sefardita, discendente degli ebrei espulsi dalla Spagna nel 1492 e accolti dalla “Porta” ottomana. Accanto a loro vivevano minoranze romaniote, stanziate soprattutto tra Epiro, Grecia e Albania, e gruppi ashkenaziti di più recente immigrazione. Con la progressiva dissoluzione dell’Impero e la nascita degli Stati nazionali – dalla Grecia (1830) alla Romania, Serbia e Montenegro (1878), Bulgaria (1908) e Albania (1912) – anche gli ebrei furono coinvolti in processi di “nazionalizzazione”, analoghi a quelli dell’Europa occidentale. L’ottomanizzazione rappresentò per molti un passaggio dall’estraneità all’inclusione nello Stato turco. Gli ebrei nutrivano verso il governo ottomano un sentimento di riconoscenza per il rifugio concesso dopo l’espulsione dalla Spagna, per la libertà religiosa garantita e per le opportunità economiche offerte. Questo legame contribuì alla stabilità e alla prosperità delle comunità per diversi secoli.
Incontri culturali e trasformazioni interne
Con il loro insediamento nelle vaste regioni ottomane, i sefarditi entrarono in contatto con antiche comunità ebraiche locali. L’incontro generò inizialmente diffidenza reciproca, ma i sefarditi, culturalmente più strutturati, finirono spesso per esercitare un’influenza dominante. Pur determinati a preservare la propria identità iberica e la lingua ladino, si svilupparono tre dinamiche: assimilazione completa, conservazione culturale autonoma o influenza reciproca. Il sistema dei millet ottomani, sistema amministrattivo delle comunità dentro l'impero, favoriva la conservazione delle differenze religiose e culturali. Le comunità ebraiche si organizzarono in quartieri urbani relativamente compatti, funzionali alla gestione fiscale, all’ordine interno e alla tutela della vita religiosa, pur senza una segregazione rigida. Tra fine Ottocento e inizio Novecento, le principali comunità sefardite erano concentrate nei grandi centri urbani come Istanbul, Salonicco e Izmir. Cosmopolite ma religiosamente tradizionali, erano guidate da rabbini formati nelle yeshivot (scuole religiose) locali, chiamati ad affrontare i processi di occidentalizzazione e secolarizzazione.
Centri urbani e tragedie del Novecento
Istanbul, capitale imperiale e crocevia commerciale tra Mar Nero e Mediterraneo, ospitava la più grande comunità ebraica dell’Impero, divenendo un modello organizzativo per le altre. Qui il sultano nominava il Chacham-Bashi, autorità religiosa suprema degli ebrei ottomani, il cui prestigio si estendeva anche alle comunità della Palestina. Salonicco era all’inizio del Novecento una vera “città ebraica”: su 173.000 abitanti, circa 80.000 erano ebrei. Il porto, chiuso il sabato, e l’industria tessile testimoniavano la centralità economica della comunità sefardita. Tuttavia, l’incendio del 1917 distrusse gran parte dei quartieri ebraici e, dopo l’occupazione nazista del 1941, la maggioranza degli ebrei fu deportata e sterminata. Anche Izmir (Smirne) visse tensioni tra greci e turchi, culminate nell’occupazione greca del 1919 e nei successivi incendi. L’obbligo del servizio militare dopo la rivoluzione dei Giovani Turchi (1908-1909) e l’instabilità politica spinsero molti ebrei a emigrare verso la Francia e le Americhe, dove si integrarono rapidamente grazie alla familiarità linguistica e culturale.
Ebrei e arabi nel Medio Oriente ottomano
Nelle province arabe dell’Impero – come Damasco e Aleppo – le comunità ebraiche erano prospere e profondamente legate alla tradizione religiosa. Secoli di convivenza con il mondo arabo-musulmano produssero una vera simbiosi socio-culturale: lingua, costumi e pratiche quotidiane si influenzarono reciprocamente, pur mantenendo una netta distinzione religiosa. Questa “arabizzazione” non intaccò l’identità ebraica, ma generò una tradizione giudeo-islamica parallela a quella giudeo-cristiana europea. Le città arabe erano vivaci centri commerciali, nei quali gli ebrei svolgevano un ruolo significativo nei traffici locali e regionali. L’ingresso delle potenze europee nel XIX secolo alterò profondamente gli equilibri. L’episodio più noto fu l’“Affare di Damasco” del 1840, un’accusa di omicidio rituale che alimentò tensioni e spinse molte famiglie ebraiche a emigrare verso altre città mediorientali e, successivamente, verso le Americhe.
Nuovi poli: Beirut, Egitto e la diaspora
Beirut divenne, grazie alla sua posizione strategica, un importante centro cosmopolita. Qui si stabilirono ebrei provenienti da Sidone, Damasco, Aleppo e Gerusalemme, soprattutto durante le fasi di risveglio del nazionalismo arabo. Negli anni Quaranta la comunità contava circa 6.000 membri, con numerose sinagoghe e scuole dell’Alliance Israélite Universelle (ente di mutuo aiuto ebraico, fondato nel 1860 a seguito del cosiddetto affare di Damasco). In Egitto, città come Alessandria d'Egitto e Il Cairo divennero centri di accoglienza per ebrei di varie origini, favoriti dalle politiche modernizzatrici e dall’apertura del Canale di Suez (1869). Alla vigilia della nascita dello Stato di Israele nel 1947, 75.000 ebrei vivevano nel Paese secondo il censimento della popolazione. Il panarabismo e l’estremismo politico degli anni Cinquanta portarono però a un nuovo esodo. Molte famiglie si dispersero in Europa, nelle Americhe e anche in Sud America, in particolare a San Paolo e Rio de Janeiro nel Brasile, dando vita a nuove diaspore.
La famiglia Soncino e la stampa
La diffusione della stampa nell’Impero Ottomano fu favorita dall’iniziativa di stampatori ebrei e dall’apporto di competenze provenienti dall’Italia. Nel 1493 i fratelli David e Samuel ibn Nahmia fondarono a Istanbul, con il permesso del sultano Bayezid II, la prima tipografia dell’impero, nella quale venne probabilmente stampato il Sefer Arbaʿa Turim di Yaakov ben Asher. Un ruolo importante nello sviluppo tecnico di questa attività fu svolto dalla famiglia Soncino, originaria dell’Italia, che contribuì a introdurre tecniche tipografiche avanzate, come nuovi modelli di impaginazione e l’uso di caratteri più raffinati. La tradizione tipografica dei Soncino risaliva a Israel Natan e fu consolidata dal figlio Yehoshua Shelomoh, che iniziò a stampare libri in ebraico a Soncino nel 1483; tra i membri più attivi vi fu anche Gerolamo Soncino, che operò tra Soncino e Brescia alla fine del Quattrocento stampando opere fondamentali della letteratura ebraica, tra cui il Mahbarot di Immanuel Romano, il Pentateuco e i Salmi. Presenza ebraica italiana ad Akko
Ad Acri (Akko), nel XIII secolo, le rivalità tra Genova e Venezia per il controllo commerciale del Mediterraneo influenzarono anche la vita delle minoranze. Dopo la Terza Crociata, i residenti non franchi furono confinati in quartieri specifici, tra cui una “strada degli ebrei”; nel 1271 gli ebrei veneziani furono obbligati a risiedere nel quartiere veneziano. Nel XVIII secolo la presenza ebraica italiana ad Akko fu segnata dalla figura di Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, noto come Ramchal. Nato a Padova, si stabilì ad Akko nel 1743, lasciando un’impronta duratura. La sinagoga a lui dedicata nella città vecchia testimonia l’influenza culturale e religiosa della componente italiana nella storia ebraica locale.

Presenza ebraica italiana ad Akko
Ad Acri (Akko), nel XIII secolo, le rivalità tra Genova e Venezia per il controllo commerciale del Mediterraneo influenzarono anche la vita delle minoranze. Dopo la Terza Crociata, i residenti non franchi furono confinati in quartieri specifici, tra cui una “strada degli ebrei”; nel 1271 gli ebrei veneziani furono obbligati a risiedere nel quartiere veneziano. Nel XVIII secolo la presenza ebraica italiana ad Akko fu segnata dalla figura di Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, noto come Ramchal. Nato a Padova, si stabilì ad Akko nel 1743, lasciando un’impronta duratura. La sinagoga a lui dedicata nella città vecchia testimonia l’influenza culturale e religiosa della componente italiana nella storia ebraica locale.
