IIndustry in turriff

Click on the buttons and follow the links to find out more about the following industries in Turriff:

  • Animal agriculture
  • Plant agriculture
  • Home building
  • Renewable energy
  • Oil and gas

Canada

Canada is one of the top producers of nickel, after the Philippines. Nickel is a hard but malleable metal that is used to make electrical connections within mobile phones, as well as being used in the production on phone batteries.

Guinea

Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, and is mined in many places, including Guinea. Aluminium is a ductile metal that is used to make phone casings and some of their components. The top producer of aluminium is China.

Jamaica

Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, and is mined in many places, including Jamaica. Aluminium is a ductile metal that is used to make phone casings and some of their components. The top producer of aluminium is China.

Australia

Lithium is used in the production of mobile phone batteries. Lithium ion batteries store energy well and have a long lifespan, making them useful in many electronics. Australia is the worlds top exporter of lithium. Australia are also big exporters of aluminium, lead, nickel (see Canada) and zinc.

Peru

Zinc is a hard metal that becomes malleable when heated. This makes it a useful metal when making a circuit board for a mobile phone. Around 70% of the world's zinc comes from mining, where are 30% comes from recycled sources. Top exporters of zinc are Peru, China and Australia.

Chile

Chile is the world's top mine producer of copper. Copper is used as an electrical conductor in mobile phone circuit boards. Copper is malleable and a good conductor, making it a useful metal for this purpose.

Philippines

The Philippines is the top producer of nickel in the world. Nickel is a hard but malleable metal that is used to make electrical connections within mobile phones, as well as being used in the production on phone batteries. It is also mined in Australia, Russia and Canada

South Africa

South Africa is the second biggest exporter of gold, after China. Small amounts of gold are used to make the circuit board in your mobile phone. Gold has properties such as being chemically stable and conductng electricity which allow it to be used for this purpose.

Indonesia

Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, and is mined in many places, including Indonesia. Aluminium is a ductile metal that is used to make phone casings and some of their components. The top producer of aluminium is China.

Russia

Russia is one of the top producers of nickel. Nickel is a hard but malleable metal that is used to make electrical connections within mobile phones, as well as being used in the production on phone batteries. Russia also mines aluminium.

Mexico

Silver is a soft precious metal that is used to make circuit boards in mobile phones. Mexico is the top producer of silver in the world.

Brazil

Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, and is mined in many places, including Brazil. Aluminium is a ductile metal that is used to make phone casings and some of their components. The top producer of aluminium is China.

China

China is the worlds top exporter of gold and aluminium. Small amounts of gold are used to make the circuit board in your mobile phone. Gold has properties such as being chemically stable and conductng electricity which allow it to be used for this purpose. China are also top producers of aluminium and lead, and export large amounts of zinc.

India

Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, and is mined in many places, including India. Aluminium is a ductile metal that is used to make phone casings and some of their components. The top producer of aluminium is China.

United States

Lead is a soft, malleable metal which is used in the solder that joins all of the parts of your mobile phone together. Although the worlds top producer is China, much of the lead we use is mined in the USA.

Word Bank

Below are some new words you may come across when exploring the metals in your mobile map. Malleable: Capable of being hammered or pressed into a new shape without being likely to break or return to the original shape. Ductile: A ductile material is capable of being drawn into thin sheets or wires without breaking. Conductor: A material which allows heat or electricity to move easily through it. Chemically Stable: The ability of a substance to remain unchanged and resist chemical reactions.

Angus Homes

Make and produce timber frame homes

This construction company make timber frames for houses all over Scotland and ship to the rest of the world, mainly America and Scandinavia. These frames for houses come from trees that have been cut down from managed forest areas. Currently this company only employ 12 people in the Turriff Area.

Things to think about...

  • Is this practise sustainable, can it be?
  • What impact does this have on the environments that the wood comes from?
  • Timber is a natural resource- does this mean it's a sustainable one?
  • How could timber farming be improved to ensure long term sustainability?

Muirden Energy (wind farm)

Renewable Energy

Wind energy is a type of renewable energy. This means that it will not run out over time. Wind energy uses the movement of the wind turbine blades to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy for our everyday use. Wind energy is considered a green energy source as it does not produce any greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

What is wind energy?

  • Think about how renewable energy might change over time.
  • What is good about wind energy?
  • What are some disadvantages?

The Oil Industry

There are Gulf and Esso petrol stations in Turriff

The oil industry relies on the extraction of crude oil from oil rigs. The crude oil that is extracted is then used for petrol among other things. Oil is a non-renewable resource, meaning that it can only be used once. Do you think this is a sustainable source of energy? How will this industry adapt and change in the future?

  • Relies on using finite fossil fuels
  • Is a contributor to climate change
  • Most people rely on this industry for their way of life
  • It is an extremely profitable industry

Animal Agriculture

Animal Agriculture is a large industry in the Turriff area. It is very important for food as many people eat meat as well as using animal products such as milk and wool. Animal agriculture requires vast areas of land that would otherwise be used for other purposes, such as growing plants, or building homes for the growing population.

  • Produces food and useful animal products
  • Uses lots of space
  • Contributes to greenhouse gases
  • Lots of local employment

Agriculture (Plants)

Growing plants for food and other uses

Plant agriculture is a large part of the community in and around Turriff and Aberdeenshire. Plants provide both humans and animals with food and fuel. Plant agriculture uses many pesticides and fertilisers and can be harmful to the environment.

Something to think about... How will plant growth be affected by climate change?
