This is the cover of the first edition of the serial, entitled "The Adventures of Oliver Twist" (January 1846). It was first published as a book by Richard Bentley in 1838.

About the Author

Born in Portsmouth, England on February 7, 1812 Died on June 9, 1870 Resting place: Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, England
he was one of the best novelists of the Victorian era He wrote 15 novels like 'A Christmas Carol', 'David Copperfield'.
When he was 12 years old he worked in a factory. In his mid-twenties he became a journalist.

About the Novel

The book is one of the earliest examples of the social novel. It draws the reader's attention to evils of society such as child labour, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children. Poor people were considered bad and criminals.
It tells the story of an orphan boy and his adventures among London's slums. Oliver is captured by, and forced to work among pickpockets and thieves until redeemed by a gentleman who has taken an interest in him.
  • Dickens's novel are full of pathos, sentimentality and melodrama.
  • In his works we can find humour and a satiric tone. In Oliver Twist he uses irony to satirize the various institutions.
  • In his novels, he underlines problems of the society in which he lives. In particular he depicts the social, economic, moral decay of England after the Industrial Revolution.
  • The hypocrisy of Middle Class who tries to be compassionate but actually is indifferent to the suffering of the poor.
