Think about your pupils’ specific needs…

• Why is this issue controversial?
• Who is most affected by this issue and how?
• Do you know your pupils well enough to understand their likely response?
• Will this issue be particularly sensitive for any individuals in the class?
• Do pupils know how to let you know if they are feeling uncomfortable?
• What will you do if someone is uncomfortable?

• Do you want to encourage debate, deliberation and respectful disagreement?
• Do you want to empower pupils by developing their fact-checking skills?
• Do you want to increase their media and information literacy?
• Do you want to develop their critical thinking?
• Do you want them to explore ways to hold those in power to account?

• Are the resources you’re planning to use age appropriate?
• How do the resources build on what pupils have already learned?
• Do they cover a variety of political views?
• If a resource is clearly one-sided (e.g. a party promotional video), how will you maintain balance?
• Can you use case studies or scenarios to provide distance between the pupils and the issue?
