Exhibiting hope is important and helpful in difficult situations.
This helmet, which also includes a light connects to the the theme because when there is even the tiniest bit of light in a dark place, it gives people reassurance. This is like having hope even in a really tough situation. When Christopher had found the helmets in the tunnels, it had been the only source of light. The light wasn't super big, but even a small amount of light brought hope and comfort to the group. This shows how important even a very small piece of hope can bring in a situation. This symbol also connects to the novel because Christopher and the group members used the helmet for so many different things like light, protecting themselves. Christopher and the group used the helmets very often. The helmet was a very important survival tool.
According to the book "MINRS", it says, "At the top of each locker was a helmet, and each helmet had a batter-powered light. Light wouldn't make the situation any less serious. But it might help everyone feel less scared, myself included," (Sylvester pg. 72).This evidence shows that even a little light can bring hope in hard circumstances.

The beacon connects to the theme because it represents hope of Christopher and the group getting rescued. When the group finds out from Christopher about there being a beacon, they get happy, and become hopeful. The group is already enduring a lot of difficult events so having hope is very important in these situations. The beacon connects to the novel because the beacon is how Christopher and the group will send a warning signal to Earth so they can get rescued. It's the only way they will ever escape and get saved. It takes the group a lot of determination, perserverance, grit, and most importantly hope to find the beacon. The beacon is an essential part of the story.
According to the book "MINRS", it says, "She and I and some of the miners hid an emergency beacon where no one could find it . . . "A beacon. My dad told me there's a warning beacon that can send a message back to Earth . . . I already told you we can find more food and water. We can survive," Sylvester pg .59-139). This evidence proves that Christopher is getting hopeful knowing that there is a warning beacon, even though the situation is full of obstacles.

The book "Oliver Twist" connects to the theme because it is one of the only items left that Christopher has from his parents. This gives him motivation and hope. As Christopher reads the book everyday, he learns a lot about how the book is similar to his own situation. Christopher ends up really connecting to the book. When reading the book, Christopher looks back on the whole situation happening with the Blackout and the Landers'. He thinks a lot when reading this book. This book gives Christopher a chance to let out the emotions he had been bottling up. The book represents hope because it is when Christopher discovers the codes which leads him the beacon.
According to the book "MINRS", it says, "Had my dad wanted me to have the book as well as the map? Was that a final gift? . . . I turned the page. His mom kissed him. The she shuddered; fell back --and died. Died? . . . The image of my own mom's death floated in front of me . . . In the end I had discovered a series of numbers . . . It was a code. But what kind of code?. . . Each unit is twenty yards, twenty, twenty tunnels, or twenty miles," (Sylvester, pg. 83-297). This evidence proves that the book was really important. It helped Christopher let out is emotons, and in the end, he figured out the code wich gave him hope.

The important rare minerals and ore connect to the theme because it shows that even though Perses was greatly damaged and destroyed, there was still a lot of valuable precious minerals left. This would demonstrate that there is still hope even in scary, tough conditions. This connects to the novel because ore is a really precious mineral in the setting. The ore is so rare, that even the Landers had come to Perses to get that stock. In this book, ore is a very important rare mineral, and was very helpful to Earth, and the Landers. In this book's setting, Earth was very resource-depleted, so the ore from Perses is extracted and sent to Earth. The ore is one of the only remaining sources left. The ore is very important to the survival of the people of Earth, just like how hope is so crucial in tough times.
According to the book "MINRS", it says, "There's actually a large hangar where the ore containers are stored . . . The ore gets dumped in the storage silos, loose," (Sylvester pg. 224). This evidence demonstrates that there is still so much ore left regardless of the damage and destruction done to Perses.

The map and codes connect to the theme because it shows that Christopher and the group still have a guide to get somewhere which gives them hope. This shows that the group have a high chance of getting somewhere because of the map and codes. The map causes the group to exhibit more hope because they know they will get rescued. The map connects to the novel because it provides a guide to get to the beacon. The map symbolizes a sign of hope to the group. The group is in a very difficult and high-stakes situation. The map provides a guide which leads to the group showing hope.
According to the book "MINRS", it says, "In here there is a map. It is your only chance to be rescued . . . Once I'd read the map and come up with a plan and a direction to go, I'd get everyone's input . . . " (Sylvester, pg. 59 -81). This evidence demonstrates that Christopher has hope to get somewhere, and enough hope to develop a plan to get rescued with the group.
