What is Artifical intelligence?

Introduction

IBM describes AI as "Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity, and autonomy." We see it everywhere, from our smartphones or the AI overviews that populate the top of a search engine Whether we want to or not, AI is everywhere and we may be using it without realizing it.

Is AI used in Research?

Short Answer: It's complicated.

There is no simple answer when it comes to deciding whether AI could or even should be used in research. Some general, guiding principles have been sort of agreed upon by various disciplines. Due to the versatility of the tool, artificial intelligence has wormed its way into the apple of education. As a result, there are some variations in what is considered okay and what's not depending on dispcline.

Research Assitant

Some ways AI has been considered is a research assistant where it make the overall process more efficient and help organize information

Generating Citations and Keywords

Because of its wide access to information, AI, particularly generative AI, is really good at generating possible lines of inquiry and possible citations or keywords, tailoring its responses to the user's inputs.

Editing and Revising

The most commonly cited use for AI was in writing (Chatterji et al.). Many student struggle to make their writing "efficient," and AI helps bridge the gap.

Research Assitant

Supplement, not replacement

There are AI tools that can help supercharge research, such as Research Rabbit. It can help untangle the web of research to reveal possible routes, lines of inquiry, and thoughts that may not have been completely obvious.

Citations and keyword research

Supplement, not replacement.

Generative AI can do more than a simple web search when trying to identify and locate background research and possible keyword combinations to input into a database. Sometimes it can be repetitive, however, with the right prompt engineering, you could find your next search terms.

Editing and Revising

It's not all about EFFICIENCY.

Due to its ability to be an adaptive learning platform, another usage that has been used is editing and revising writing. This includes helping revise for tone, style, and word choice. With a few prompts back and forth, students can have an AI writing tutor that scales to their needs.

General acknowledgements about AI and learning

Rules of thumb:

Must consider ethical use.Invovles human oversight, issues of data privacy and personal privacy, transparency, and equity.

Some commonly accepted guidance amongst all the different disciplines.

A clear division of labor. AI must not be seen as a replacement for human reasoning, critical thinking, and creation

A word of Caution

AI has made itself very hard to navigate. Since its inception into the mainstream at the end of 2022, there have been some common acceptances:

Transparency and disclosure. Any AI use should be disclosed by the user.

Instructors' discretion. It is left up to the instructor to decide what is okay and what is not based on their expertise, pedagogical knowledge, and course content.

AI Dangers

There are many dangers, and not all are obvious.

When it comes to AI's shortcomings, there are many to consider. Environmental, security, lack of accountability, and human harm, to name a few areas. When it comes to research, there's a real risk of offloading critical skills and judgment calls with human oversight if we're not careful.

Bias

Some Dangers of AI Usage

AIs were originally trained on human-created data and information, and humans are not infallible to biases. Whether we realize or not, we carry certain biases. As a result, AI has been shown to have biases as well, especially when it comes to race and gender.

Data Privacy Issues

Whenever you upload information, you are helping train AI. There are also concerns about how that data is used and stored, and whether or not it is stored safely or with the users' best interests at heart.

Intellectual property infringement

OpenAI was accused of copyright infringement in order to train its service. Encyclopædia Britannica is one example. How do you know it isn't plagiarizing someone's work?

The Real Issue of Cognitive offloading

Don't let it think for you.

A study done at MIT in 2025 forecasted some of the extent to which using generative AI to do a lot of heavy lifting in the act of writing an essay showed there was less learning to occur, in contrast to the groups that used old school methods and the search engine. This alarming trend was one of the first of its kind and challenged the perceptions that AI necessarily means better efficiency or quality of work.

Conclusion:

AI doesn't mean better quality.

While AI might allow you to run an assignment, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the right choice. There are many issues to consider. In addition, you should always check to see if your instructor allows any usage at all, and if so, to what extent. Artificial intelligence should be used to supplement work, not as a replacement, if at all.

Disciplines like Visual Thinking facilitate visually rich note-taking thanks to the use of images, graphics, infographics, and simple drawings. Go for it!

Basic Concepts

  • We are visual beings. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.
  • Narrative beings. We tell thousands and thousands of stories. ⅔ of our conversations are stories.
  • Social beings. We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.
  • Digital beings. We avoid being part of the content saturation in the digital world.
  • Creative beings. Fun is needed for creativity, creativity for innovation, innovation for success... Fun is success.
  • Exploring beings. We turn visual communication into an experience when we add interactivity, animation, and storytelling.

Some common Everyday uses of AI

  • Smart assistants on your phone
  • Tools that summarize and highlight information.
  • Writing tools that help you with things such as Grammarly
  • Built in AI tools to be more predictive with user activities.

AI is not a replacement for human work. AI lacks the experiences, knowledge, and insights that bring the depth and character to human generated work versus that of the AI.

Tools and Resources

Did you know...90% of the information we assimilate comes through sight? Visual resources are very helpful in reinforcing your message: images, illustrations, gifs, videos… Not only because they remain in memory, but also because they are more attractive and easier to understand.

  • It is clear and structured
  • Tells stories hierarchically.
  • Matches your audience.
  • Adapts fonts and color to the theme.
  • Includes images and entertains.
  • Represents data with graphics.
  • Uses timelines.
  • Is animated and interactive.
  • Excites the brain through multimedia elements.
  • DOES NOT exceed with bullet points 🙃.

It's about the process, not the end product

  • Rhetoric and composition have long argued that writing is not about the end product but more about the writing process, including doing the research and legwork.
  • MIT's study also demonstrated that most learning occurred in the non-AI groups, as they were able to recall more information, and brain scans revealed the most activity occurring.

Some common agreement on what's okay

  • Research uses must fall under ethical use.
  • There needs to be a clear distinction between human labor and AI labor.
  • There is some disclosure or transparency regarding usage.
  • Left often up to the instructor's discretion
  • Check with your instructor for final say.

Tip: Interactivity is the key to capturing the interest and attention of your audience. A genially is interactive because your audience explores and interacts with it.

No matter the amount of other contingencies around AI usage, it comes down to whether or not the instructor allows it in the course. Always check with your instructor.

Ethical use: This is a difficult term to define and envision due to the discrepancy between disciplines and uses. Determine how ethical use applys for the contexts of the task and the parties invovled.
