Vasco Núñez de Balboa Vasco Núñez de Balboa was born in Spain in 1475. As a boy, he heard exciting stories about explorers sailing to new lands. He dreamed of becoming an explorer one day. When he grew up, he traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. Balboa first settled on an island in the Caribbean. Life there was not easy. He had money problems and faced danger from storms and sickness. Later, he joined a group of explorers traveling to the mainland of Central America. In 1513, Balboa led a small group of men across thick jungles and tall mountains. The trip was very hard. The weather was hot, and there were wild animals and rough paths. After many days of walking, Balboa reached the top of a mountain. From there, he saw a huge ocean on the other side. He became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. He claimed it for Spain. Balboa’s discovery was important because it showed that there was another great ocean beyond the New World. This helped other explorers plan future voyages. Even though Balboa was brave, his life ended sadly. He faced trouble with other leaders and was arrested. In 1519, he was put to death. Today, Vasco Núñez de Balboa is remembered as an explorer who crossed land to discover a new ocean and helped people learn more about the world.
