The Colosseum
Location: Rome, Italy Date built: 71–80 AD The Colosseum was a big arena in ancient Rome. It was the largest amphitheatre ever built. People watched gladiator fights, wild animals and executions there. The Colosseum was used for over 500 years. Later, it became a storehouse, a church and a cemetery. Today, it is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
Location: Pisa, Italy Date built: 1174–1350 The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a bell tower next to the cathedral. It is about 56 metres tall. At first, builders wanted the tower to be straight. But when they started building, the south side began to sink. They tried to fix it by making the columns taller on one side. But the tower still leans. Today, the top is about 5 metres away from the base.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
Location: Florence, Italy Date built: 1296–1436 The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is in the centre of Florence. When it was built, it was the third largest church in the world. The big dome was designed by Brunelleschi. He built it without machines. Today, it is still the biggest brick dome in the world. Its base is about half the size of a football field.
Ruins of Pompeii
Location: Pompeii, near Naples, Italy Date built: 6–7th century BC (founded), destroyed in 79 AD Pompeii was an important Roman city with about 11,000 people. In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted and covered the city with ash. Today, the ruins are an archaeological site. Many things are well preserved, so we can learn a lot about life in ancient Rome.
