Dans le roman Le Colonel Chabert de Balzac, le personnage principal, le colonel d'Empire Hyacinthe Chabert, est laissé pour mort à la bataille d'Eylau, en 1807. Balzac donne très peu de détails concernant son retour en France à Paris, en 1815. En effet, on sait qu'il fut secouru par deux paysans, qu'on l'envoya en convalescence à l'Hôpital d'Heilsberg, qu'il erra sur les routes d'Allemagne et, arrêté et déclaré fou, qu'il fut finalement enfermé à la prison de Stuttgart. Libéré en 1814, il entra enfin dans Paris, en 1815. L'écrivain a passé sous silence, sous forme d'ellipses, des étapes de son retour ; il y aurait donc beaucoup de moments à combler, à inventer dans la vie du pauvre Colonel Chabert.
