It is grounded in the Universal Declaration of human rights and international human rights treaties and enphasises the responsibilities of all states to respect, protect and promote human rights.

The official mission statement of this goal is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This goal is fundamental to building a more just and prosperous world for all.
Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but it is also a prerequisite for sustainable development. Women and girls play a crucial role in all aspects of society, from economics to politics, from family to community.

The targets of the 5 Goal are:
-End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls. -Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres. -Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation. -Value unpaid care and promote shared domestic responsibilities. -Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership in political, economic and public life. -Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
What can we do?
-Voice our support for equal pay for equal work. -Be aware of gender stereotypes, recognize them, avoid them and educate others about them. -Stand up against harassment. Whenever you see or become aware of harassment raise your voice against it. -Sharing domestic responsibilities ensures the work burden doesn’t fall only on one person and instills the value of gender equality and essential life skills in children.
