Behind the Masks of the World

Rhythm, Color, and Memory

Carnivals are cultural expressions that transcend time and geography, becoming living manifestations of identity, history, and tradition. Through costume, music, and symbolic elements, each carnival reflects the essence of its community and its social context.

VENICE

The music of the Venice Carnival is elegant, dramatic, and deeply connected to the city’s artistic golden age. It reflects the atmosphere of 17th- and 18th-century Venice, when the city was one of Europe’s most important cultural capitals. The overall musical tone is: Refined, romantic, grand, mysterious, theatrical

The identity of the Venice Carnival is centered on anonymity, elegance, and transformation. Through masks and elaborate 17th–18th century costumes, social status temporarily disappears, allowing people to reinvent themselves. It reflects Venice’s aristocratic past, artistic heritage, and love for mystery, turning the entire city into a stage where tradition, theater, and freedom blend together.

The clothing reflects aristocratic Venetian fashion from the Baroque and Rococo periods. During the carnival, masks allowed people of different social classes to mix freely. Identity disappeared. Status became invisible. That was the power of the mask.

Dominant color: black, gold, deep red, royal blue, white.

BRAZIL

The celebration promotes unity, creativity, and freedom of expression, allowing people from different social backgrounds to come together. Carnival is not only a festival it is a symbol of national pride and cultural heritage.

Brazil’s Carnival clothing is bright, colorful, and extravagant. Costumes often feature feathers, sequins, glitter, and rhinestones. In samba parades, outfits are elaborate and reflect a theme or story. In street celebrations, clothing is more casual, creative, and comfortable. Overall, the style expresses joy, energy, and celebration.

MAZATLÁN

Music in Mazatlan’s Carnival is unique because it isn't based on Samba or Salsa, but on local tradition.Banda Sinaloense: This is the "heartbeat" of the event. It features brass instruments (trumpets, trombones, tubas) and heavy percussion (tambora). You will hear it on every corner, on the floats, and at every dance. The "Olas Altas" Experience: Unlike other carnivals with a single parade route, Mazatlan turns the entire Olas Altas beachfront into a massive open-air dance floor where dozens of bands play simultaneously.

The visual aspect of the carnival is a mix of high-fashion royalty and street party comfort.Royal Gowns: The Queen’s outfits are legendary. These are massive, intricate dresses often inspired by European royalty or mythological themes. They are heavy, decorated with sequins, feathers, and crystals, and can take months to create. The "Monigotes": While not wearable clothes, these giant, colorful paper-mâché sculptures placed along the boardwalk (Malecón) set the "dress code" and theme for the year.

It is a festival that reflects the essence of Mazatlán: joyful, musical, community-oriented, and deeply rooted in its traditions. Mazatlán is sea, boardwalk, and community. Carnival is experienced in the streets and on the boardwalk, reinforcing its open, festive, and collective character. More than a party, it is a shared feeling. It represents family unity, local pride, and generational continuity.
