EXAMPLE

Here are some important things to know before going into an interview:

  • The name and position title
  • The product or service the company provides
  • The responsibilities of the job you’re interviewing for
  • The company's mission statement (if they have one)
  • The company’s core values and workplace culture

Here are some items you might consider bringing to a job interview:

  • A printed copy of your resume or CV
  • Prepare a few thoughtful questions to ask when the interviewer invites you to ask questions at the end of the interview.

One of the simplest ways to get ready for an interview is to choose a professional outfit.

You don’t need a fancy suit or expensive accessories to make a positive first impression.

Click on each item below to see if it's appropriate to wear to an interview!

Click the laptop to access the JA Inspire Career Exploration Platform, then choose a company you would like to work for.

On the next slides, think about how you would answer these common interview questions if you were applying for a job at this company.

Please tell me about yourself!

Why do you want this job?

What are your greatest strengths?

What are your greatest weaknesses?

Tell me about a time you overcame a challenge.

Do you have any questions for me?

Remember to thank the interviewer for their time and consideration.

A good way to do this is by sending a follow-up email within 48 hours of your interview.

Click on the laptop to view the example email.

Interview Response Tip:

This is one of the most common interview questions you will be asked. Share one or two interesting details about yourself, such as a fun story or a hobby, but focus mainly on your education and experience. Be sure to mention any clubs you’ve joined or relevant CTE classes you’ve taken. You can also use this opportunity to highlight your knowledge of the company by mentioning its mission statement or core values and how they align with your goals.

To: From: Subject: Thank You Dear Hiring Manager, Thank you for taking the time to meet with me yesterday. I appreciated getting to learn more about the company. Please let me know if you have any further questions about my application materials. I look forward to hearing from you!

Interview Response Tip:

This is your chance to highlight your strengths, so keep it short and focused. Choose 2–3 skills or qualities you excel at that would help you succeed in this role. Some Examples:
  • "I am really good at clear communication!"
  • "I am a creative thinker and like coming up with solutions!"
Example Job Title and Relatable Skills:
  • Job Title: Junior Achievement Marketing Coordinator
Example Skills:
  • "I am great at organizing projects and keeping track of deadlines."
  • "I enjoy creating engaging social media content that connects with people."
  • "I have strong teamwork skills and enjoy collaborating with others to reach goals."

Interview Response Tip:

This is one of the trickiest interview questions that almost every interviewer asks. You should list 1-2 honest opportunities for growth, as well as solutions. Some examples are:
  • “It can be hard for me to say no. I need clear expectations for my job responsibilities so I do not over-extend myself.”
Some examples not to share are:
  • “I’m not good with computers,” if the job requires computer skills.
  • “I don’t get along with coworkers,” since teamwork is important.

To: From: Subject: Thank You Dear Hiring Manager, Thank you for taking the time to meet with me yesterday. I appreciated getting to learn more about the company. Please let me know if you have any further questions about my application materials. I look forward to hearing from you!

Interview Response Tip:

This is an opportunity for you to show off your problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills. Bonus points if you can think of a situation that required you to take initiative or collaborate with others.

Interview Response Tip:

This is where you can show off your knowledge of the company! Make sure to mention what you like about the product or service they provide and why you think you would be a good fit for the position.

Interview Response Tip:

Yes! You should have questions! Having questions for the interviewer shows that you are thinking deeply about the job role and what it would mean to work there. If you don’t have any specific questions, you can ask questions such as:
  • “What is your favorite part about working here?”
  • “What is something you wish everyone who applied knew about this job?”
