- This period is named after Devon, England which is where fossils from this time were first studied.
- Coral reefs developed and expanded which provided habitats for diverse marine life which aided in the large expansion of marine life that happened.
- The Late Devonian Extinction occurred about 370 million years ago and took out most placoderms and corals and other marine species
- The first true sharks evolved and showed the development that would lead to them being modern day apex predators
