DISCLAIMER

Eli's identity is visually contextualized in a later scene, but here the audience may infer that she's referring to being a vampire, when in reality it can be interpreted as a double-reference to both her vampire and gender identity. The film's story is primarily built on Eli and Oskar's connection and leaves out the harmful stereotypes about trans women being predatory that the book unfortunately perpetuates. It is worth noting that the 2022 series adaptation of the same name also removes the debatebly pedophilic subtext of Eli being an ancient vampire in a child's body.

Both/and: Since "Angela" was portrayed as being forced into their gender expression, the queer themes of this film are widely critiqued as problematic, AND some viewers still find resonance in queer struggle and resilience. Different people connect with different readings of this film and that's valid.

Four outcast girls find each other and form a bond that mirros a found family. Their power comes from being different, which can be seen as queer identity as strength. Witches have long symbolized a femme population outcasted from and misunderstood by mainstream society. Our characters aren't explicitly queer, but the craft has allegories of queer community throughout. However, The Craft: Legacy (2020) has explicit queer storylines, actors, and characters.

This scene can be interpreted as a metaphor for "forbidden" desire. Hutter's fear and bewilderment ccan be seen as portraying society's fear of homosexuality, which had just been outlawed in Germany at the time. The Shadow = the "other" as monstrous.

While this film depicts Needy in a heterosexual relationship, these scenes are considered lackluster. Cis-gender, heterosexual men complained about the kiss scene between her and Jennifer, but it probably wasn't made with the hetero male gaze in mind.

Angelica Ross's character in this season is one of the first in the American Horror Story series in which a queer storyline does not center purely around queer pain. If it is brought up it is usually from the character’s personal perspective and experiences. Ms. Ross was the first trans actress to secure two series regulars.
