The frontal lobe and the prefrontal cortex (PFC)

The prefrontal cortex is part of the frontal lobe that is found in the front part of the brain. This section of the brain may not be fully developed for those that are affected by ADHD. Therefore, they have issues with the following brain functions:

  • Working memory
  • Controlling emotions and behaviors
  • Being aware of their surroundings
  • Focusing
  • Planning and organizing

Executive Function Affected

basal ganglia

The basal ganglia is located in the middle of the brain mostly under the frontal lobe. This part of the brain controls a person's movement as well as other functions like processing, decision-making, and emotions. A person may notice the follow symptoms of ADHD:

  • Gets up and moves around a lot or cannot sit still
  • Unable to wait for their turn when playing a game or talking
  • Talks more than usual

ADHD Symptoms

corpus callosum

The corpus callosum is located in the middle of the brain behind the basal ganglia. This part of the brain is where the left and right hemispheres talk to each other. It allows your brain to interpret senses, tells you how to move, and houses the cognitive functions. A person's age may affect ADHD symptoms:

  • Instead of moving around a lot, people tend to talk faster, change jobs a lot, or travel more.
  • Instead of being disruptive, people may not drive safe, alcohol/drug use, or stay up late watching TV shows
  • Ability to pay attention may be the same

ADHD Symptoms through aging

cerebellum

The cerebellum is located at the back of the head right above the spinal cord. This part of the brain helps with coordinating movements, thoughts, and attention . A person may notice the follow symptoms of ADHD:

  • Unable to control movements (cognitive and motor)
