Evaluating
FITNESS Claims
In a digital world
Utah Core Standard FFL.3.3- Evaluate the validity of commercial fitness claims
WHAT IS A FITNESS CLAIM?
A fitness claim is any statement that suggests a product, program, supplement, or device will improve your physical health, performance, appearance, or weight.
WHY?
We are surrounded by fitness marketing every day:
- Social media influencers
- Supplement advertisements
- 30-day transformation programs
- Quick-fix weight loss claims
Learning to evaluate these claims protects your health and your money.
"QUICK FIX" PROMISES
Many programs promise:
- Rapid weight loss
- Extreme muscle gain
- Guaranteed results
Science rarely works in absolutes...
"the only absolute truth is that there are no absolute truths."

For evaluating Fitness Claims
3. Absolutes
1. Credibility
Watch for extreme or guaranteed claims:
'Lose 20 pounds in 10 days'
'Works for everyone'
'No effort required'
Who is making the claim?
Certified professional?
Medical or scientific background?
Or just an influencer?
4. Profit
2. research
What are they selling?
Supplements?
Memberships?
Programs?
Is there scientific evidence?
Peer-reviewed studies?
Reliable sources cited?
Large sample sizes?
Example claim #1
Ask yourself:
Who created it?
Where is the research?
Is the language exaggerated?
What is being sold?
