Paul Gauguin nacque a Parigi nel 1848. Da piccolo visse in Perù e questo viaggio gli lasciò per sempre la voglia di scoprire posti lontani. Da adulto faceva un lavoro normale in banca, ma a un certo punto decise di cambiare vita: lasciò tutto per diventare un pittore a tempo pieno. Non gli piaceva la vita moderna delle grandi città, che considerava finta e noiosa, così andò a vivere in Bretagna (nel nord della Francia) e poi a Tahiti, un'isola dell'Oceano Pacifico. Lì cercava una vita più semplice e "vera". Nei suoi quadri usava colori molto forti e linee scure intorno alle figure. Morì nel 1903 proprio in quelle isole lontane, dopo aver creato uno stile unico che ha cambiato la storia dell'arte.
