''Kampuchea democratica'' è il nome che assume la Cambogia sotto la brutale dittatura comunista dei Khmer Rossi, guidata da Pol Pot. Nel 1975 le forze dei Khmer Rossi sconfiggono l'esercito di Lon Nol e conquistano Phnom Penh. Le città vengono immediatamente evacuate e il paese viene isolato dal mondo esterno. La società è divisa tra: ''rivoluzionari puri'' (contadini e fedeli al partito) e ''nemici di classe'' (ufficiali, soldiati e funzionari di Lon Nol, cittadini urbani, intellettuali, monaci buddisti e minoranze etniche, come cinesi, vietnamiti, musulamani Cham e thailandesi).

LA CAMBOGIA
La Cambogia è un piccolo stato tra Vietnam, Thailandia e Laos in cui, tra il 1975 e il 1979, è avvenuto ciò che è passato alla storia come ''il genocidio dei Khmer Rossi''. Dopo l'indipendenza dalla Francia nel 1954, la Cambogia fu governata in modo autoritario da Sihanouk, ma profonde divisioni politiche portarono a una guerra civile aggravata dai bombardamenti statunitensi. Nel 1970 il generale Lon Nol prese il potere con un colpo di stato, mentre Sihanouck si alleò con i Khmer Rossi, raffornzandone il consenso.
