Cos’è un terremoto :
è una rapida liberazione di energia meccanica nella crosta o Mantello, che genera vibrazioni che possono variare di intensità. sotto forma di onde sferiche attraversano tutta la terra tanto da poter essere registrate da strumenti sparsi per tutto il mondo, sono fenomeni frequenti ma solo un migliaio sono percepibili da noi e solo una decina possono causare gravi danni e se si verificano in zone abitate.

Sismologia :
studio dei terremoti o sismi, grazie alla raccolta di innumerevoli dati e alla loro elaborazione da parte di una comunità di studiosi sempre più imponente. Si è capito il meccanismo di origine di un terremoto, strumenti sono stati successivamente progettati per registrare.
Modello del rimbalzo elastico :
Harry F. Reid :
Fu infatti dopo il terremoto di san Francisco del 1906 accompagnato da vistosi movimenti del terreno lungo la faglia di San andreas, prese in esame alcuni rilevamenti topografici effettuati nella zona nel corso dei 50 anni precedenti il terremoto e altri ripetuti dopo l’evento.
rendendosi così conto che prima del terremoto anno dopo anno, quelle strade, palizzate e corsi d’acqua si erano incurvati nel tratto in cui attraversavano il percorso della faglia.
l'americano Harry F. Reid realizo il modello. Secondo il quale le rocce, sottoposte a forze compressive, per un periodo si comportano da corpi elastici, superato il carico di rottura la roccia si spezza. Con una faglia invece, i due blocchi si spostano in modo improvviso, liberando istantaneamente tutta l'energia accumullata.
Ciclo sismico :
una zona in cui si è appena manifestato un terremoto dovrebbe aver raggiunto un nuovo equilibrio, col tempo nuova energia si accumulare nuovamente fino a manifestarsi con un altro sisma.
Il processo che si ripete sistematicamente tra un terremoto ed il successivo si chiama ciclo sismico e comprende 4 stadi.
I 4 stadi del ciclo sismico:
- Stadio inter-sismico: Periodo di accumulazione dell'energia elastica.
- Stadio pre-sismico: Deformazione delle roccie, fino al livello critico di resistenza producendo variazioni.
- Stadio co-sismico: Si ha il terremoto con liberazione dell'energia.
- Stadio post-sismico: L'area torna haun nuovo stato di equilibrio, dopo le scose di asestamento.
Il ciclo sismico è il presupposto di una serie di ricerche su cui si basa la prevenzione dei terremoti. Si può pensare, di individuare è teorizare l'intervallo tra crisi sismiche successive, per una regione.
Sismografi :
le onde si propagano su tutta la Terra e vengono registrate da strumenti detti sismografi, consentono di raccogliere e archiviare una grande quantità di dati su i terremoti, trasformando il complesso movimento del suolo, in una registrazione permanente, così da poterli studiare.
Sismografi :
- analogici: Per il principio di inerzia la massa legata al penino rimane immobile anche quando il supporto inizia a muoversi durate il sisma, il pennino scrive su un rullo di carta rotante solidale con il suolo, traciando il sismogramma.
- elettromagnetici: Simile ha gli analogici, con la differenza che la massa sospesa è avvolta da una bobina di rame ed è immersa in un campo magnetico generato da un magnete.
- digitali: Sono di solito costituiti dallo strumento di misurazione vero e proprio, detto sismometro e da un computer, hanno una sensibilità molto elevata, che può essere acentuata ulteriormente costruendo delle reti sismiche ingrado di rilevare movimenti del terreno inferiori al millesimo di millesimo.
Epicentro :
Ipocentro :
L'epicentro è il punto della superficie terrestre posto esattamente sopra l’ipocentro, ed il luogo dove il terremoto produce generalmente effetti di intensità maggiore.
I sismologi sono riusciti a costruire dei grafici chiamati dromocrone, che indicano i tempi di arrivo dei singoli tipi di onde a seconda della distanza della stazione di rilevamento dall’epicentro.
Il punto all'interno della terra da cui l'energia scaturisce e denominato Ipocentro o fuoco, affinché un sismogramma possa fornire indicazioni sulla profondità dell’ipocentro sono necessarie le registrazioni di varie stazioni così sono stati distinti in terremoti :
• superficiale, quando la profondità arriva fino a 70 km; 75% • intermediio, con profondità fino a 300 km; 22% • profondo, se si verifica da 300 km fino alla base del mantello superiore circa 700 km ; 3%
Il calcolo della distanza dell’epicentro di un terremoto da una stazione sismica: si misurare, sul sismogramma registrato in quella stazione, la differenza tra il tempo di arrivo della prima onda P e quello della prima onda S, cercando poi sull’ascissa della dromocrona la distanza dell'epicentro a cui corrisponde un intervallo pari a quello misurato.
