Il cielo sopra di noi
Osservare il cielo notturno suscita in noi un mix di soggezione e desiderio di conoscenza verso l'infinito. Storicamente, gli astronomi hanno diviso gli astri in due categorie: le stelle fisse, che mantengono posizioni reciproche costanti, e i pianeti (dal greco planetes, ovvero "viandanti"), caratterizzati da un moto proprio che li porta a spostarsi lungo la volta celeste. Anche oggi, monitorando il cielo per più notti, possiamo distinguere questi due comportamenti. Noteremmo inoltre che l'intera sfera celeste sembra ruotare uniformemente attorno a un asse immaginario, completando un giro di 360° in circa 24 ore {il cosiddetto moto di rotazione apparente).
Le stelle non sono distribuite uniformemente nella via celeste. C'è una fascia che percorre tutto il cielo in cui in cui le stelle sono così ammassate da creare un'immagine di una grande striscia binacastra, poco luminosa: la Via Lattea.
In pratica il nostro sistema solare, si trova all'interno di un'enorme sistema di stelle, a forma di disco che appartiene a una galassia, ossia un'enorme agglomerato di stelle che ruota attorno a un centro o a un nucleo galattico, così come i pianeti ruotano attorno al sole.
Le stelle
Un'altra caratteristica che distingue le stelle è il colore, che dipende dalla temperatura della loro superficie. In ordine di temperatura decrescente, troviamo stelle blu, che sono le più calde; poi le bianche, gialle, arancioni, rosse, le più fredde.
Se osserviamo con attenzione le stelle del cielo ci rendiamo conto che non sono tutte uguali tra di loro, alcune sono più luminose altre meno. La diversa luminosità dipende oltre che dall'effettiva quantità di energia emessa e dalla massa, anche dalla distanza dalla Terra. Alcune stelle possono apparire meno luminose di altre perchè sono molto più lontane.

Cosa sono le stelle? Sono grandi masse gassose di forma sferica composte principalmente da due elementi chimici: Idrogeno ed elio. Grazie alla reazione di fusione nucleare che avviene nella loro regione più interna , nel nucleo, emettono grandi quantità di energia, come luce, calore e altri tipi di radiazione, mentre l'energia liberata dalle reazioni nucleari tende a farle espandere verso l'esterno la forza di gravità che agisce verso il centro , tende a comprimerle verso l'interno. La loro stabilità dipende dall'equilibrio di queste due forze.

Il cielo sopra di noi
Osservare il cielo notturno suscita in noi un mix di soggezione e desiderio di conoscenza verso l'infinito. Storicamente, gli astronomi hanno diviso gli astri in due categorie: le stelle fisse, che mantengono posizioni reciproche costanti, e i pianeti (dal greco planetes, ovvero "viandanti"), caratterizzati da un moto proprio che li porta a spostarsi lungo la volta celeste. Anche oggi, monitorando il cielo per più notti, possiamo distinguere questi due comportamenti. Noteremmo inoltre che l'intera sfera celeste sembra ruotare uniformemente attorno a un asse immaginario, completando un giro di 360° in circa 24 ore {il cosiddetto moto di rotazione apparente).
Le stelle non sono distribuite uniformemente nella via celeste. C'è una fascia che percorre tutto il cielo in cui in cui le stelle sono così ammassate da creare un'immagine di una grande striscia binacastra, poco luminosa: la Via Lattea.
In pratica il nostro sistema solare, si trova all'interno di un'enorme sistema di stelle, a forma di disco che appartiene a una galassia, ossia un'enorme agglomerato di stelle che ruota attorno a un centro o a un nucleo galattico, così come i pianeti ruotano attorno al sole.
Le stelle
Un'altra caratteristica che distingue le stelle è il colore, che dipende dalla temperatura della loro superficie. In ordine di temperatura decrescente, troviamo stelle blu, che sono le più calde; poi le bianche, gialle, arancioni, rosse, le più fredde.
Se osserviamo con attenzione le stelle del cielo ci rendiamo conto che non sono tutte uguali tra di loro, alcune sono più luminose altre meno. La diversa luminosità dipende oltre che dall'effettiva quantità di energia emessa e dalla massa, anche dalla distanza dalla Terra. Alcune stelle possono apparire meno luminose di altre perchè sono molto più lontane.

Cosa sono le stelle? Sono grandi masse gassose di forma sferica composte principalmente da due elementi chimici: Idrogeno ed elio. Grazie alla reazione di fusione nucleare che avviene nella loro regione più interna , nel nucleo, emettono grandi quantità di energia, come luce, calore e altri tipi di radiazione, mentre l'energia liberata dalle reazioni nucleari tende a farle espandere verso l'esterno la forza di gravità che agisce verso il centro , tende a comprimerle verso l'interno. La loro stabilità dipende dall'equilibrio di queste due forze.
