Groupwork activities are designed to provide more comprehensive training to learners by challenging them to dig into materials or solve specific problems together.
TRAINER IS INVOLVED
The trainer should be present throughout the groupwork project. At minimum, they should observe group dynamics and progress on the project. They may need to provide additional advice, direction, or administration as needed.
BREADTH VARIES
Groupwork activities can encompass a broad variety of training objectives, or they can be centered on one specific training focus.
UPDATE-ABILITY DEPENDS
Some groupwork activities can be quickly updated when there are changes to information or workflow. Other activities may require more re-working to account for updates, or they may be rendered irrelevant altogether.
LENGTHY PREP TIME
Trainers will need to dedicate a meaningful amount of time to adequately prepare for a groupwork project. Some activities or materials may already be created, but time still needs to be spent obtaining buy in, setting expectations, and organizing the group.
EASY TO REPLICATE
Once groupwork activities have been outlined and associated materials created, they are easy to continuing using with new groups of learners over time. Each group will have different experiences, but the training itself is easy to reuse.
LENGTHY LEARNING TIME
Most groupwork activities will take time for learners to conduct research, collaborate, and/or prepare a final product. Some activities may be contained in one meeting, though ample time should still be allotted for effective collaboration to occur.
EASY TO SCALE
Multiple learners are required in order to use this training method. Group size is recommended to be around 3-5 people. If there is a larger cohort of learners, multiple groups can be created, though a trainer may need help from others to manage.
TAILORED
Groupwork activities should be tailored to specific learning goals and needs. Generic activities can be created and prepped, but then tweaked for certain departments, roles, or training objectives.
FUNCTIONALITY VARIES
Groupwork activities can be designed to help learners understand concepts, apply practical know-how, or both.
IN PERSON OR VIRTUAL
Groupwork activities can be adjusted based on virtual or in-person presence. Some may be easier to administer one way or the other, but with some creativity they can be adjusted to accordingly.
DIFFICULT TO ACCESS
Learners are not able to initiate or access groupwork activities on their own, as prepwork and oversight is needed. Once a groupwork project has been initiated, certain materials may then be made accessible to learners.
