Students organized nationwide walkouts because they believed thousands of students acting together would send a stronger message than individual complaints.

After multiple school shootings occurred within a short period of time, students argued that waiting years for change felt dangerous because another shooting could happen at any moment.

Some students said attending class as usual after repeated school shootings made them feel guilty, as if continuing their normal routine meant accepting the violence.

Students who spoke out about protecting classmates struggled with the feeling that sitting quietly in class conflicted with their belief that school shootings were a serious problem.

After the Parkland school shooting, many students said they could no longer think of school shootings as distant news once they understood that kids their own age were being killed at school.

Many students described the Parkland shooting as the moment when concern turned into action because the victims were their age and in a familiar school setting.

After multiple Students understood leaving class violated school rules, but believed disrupting the school day highlighted how unsafe schools had become.

Students knew a single walkout would not stop gun violence, but believed leaving class showed how seriously they took the issue of school safety.

some students said they imagined how they would feel if another shooting happened and they had stayed silent during a moment when students across the country were speaking out.

Although they could not vote, students said walking out was a way to show that young people still had power to influence public discussion about school safety.
