Greek myths have been told for thousands of years, long before books, films or video games existed. People shared these stories by speaking them aloud, passing them from one generation to the next. Over time, the tales often changed, with new details added, old ones forgotten or endings altered. This makes the myths unpredictable and full of surprises. They are not just entertaining; they help people understand the world, explain why things happen and explore ideas about bravery, cleverness and human nature. Every telling is a chance to discover something new. Greek mythology is everywhere. Superstar footballers have the Midas touch, fashion designers have their Muses, we undertake Herculean tasks, we make personal Odysseys, and we all have our Achilles heel. This book gives you a selection of some of the greatest mortals, immortals and monsters in Greek mythology. Human beings are really important in the Greek myths. The stories are full of mighty gods, scary monsters, talking animals and magic, but the heroes and heroines are amazing mortal men and women with big personalities.

Greek gods and goddesses look like men and women, although they are stronger, more beautiful, and have mysterious powers. Even though they are immortal, they often behave like humans: they are always fighting, arguing, sulking and doing nasty and unpleasant things. Which makes for brilliant storytelling! Mythical monsters are awesome and frightening, and even the gods and goddesses can have trouble controlling them. Heroes often have to fight and subdue them, so that the world can be a safer place for all of us.

MYTHS ARE IMPORTANT

GREEK NAMES ARE HARD

Greek myths are much more than children's stories… they might, or might not, be true, but this doesn't take away their power. They are traditional tales that are incredibly important to the people who tell them. But they are also free-flowing, adaptable, and very good for us to think about. They help us to understand the world.

Greek names can be really difficult, and there are lots of different ways of spelling them in English. Achilles is really Akhilleus in Greek; Clytemnestra is actually Klytaimnestra and Opedius is called Oidipous. Sometimes the Greek gods and heroes are given Roman names too, so Odysseus becomes Ulysses, and Zeus becomes Jupiter or Jove! So we've chosen the most familiar spellings, but given you their names in Greek too!

I then read the list carefully and find and take a clear example.
