I.C. “Bernacchia- Schweitzer”,Termoli, Italy The last bear (chapter 9) In this chapter, April and Bear become close friends. April brings him food everyday, especially peanut butter and biscuits. At first Bear doesn’t trust her, but slowly he learns to trust her because she comes back again and again and cares for him. Although they cannot talk with words, April and Bear understand each other through actions and feelings. Then friendship grows day by day. Our considerations Friendship can happen in unexpected ways. April and Bear are very different, she’s a girl, he’s a wild polar bear but they still become friends. This shows that friendship is about trust and kindness. True friendship needs patience and care. Bear is scared at first, so April has to be patient, gentle and brave. This teaches us that good friends are those who don’t give up and who helps each other. Summary April moves to Bear Island with her father and feels lonely. One day she finds a polar bear who is hurt and weak because of human pollution. She feeds him, cares for him and they become friends. April learns that Bear need to return to his home in the Artic. She bravely helps him get back safely, even if it’s difficult and April feels proud she helped her friend. Message The story teaches us that: • Kindness and care make a difference. • We must protect nature because pollution and climate change hurt animals. • Even small actions can help make the world better
