introduction
Why does this goal exist?
-I would rather be a rebel than a slave.- Emmeline Pankhurst
But we're late: at the progress' rate of 2023, it would take an estimated 300 years to end child marriage, 286 years to close gaps in legal protection and remove discriminatory laws, 140 years for women to be represented equally in positions of power and leadership in the workplace, and 47 years to achieve equal representation in national parliaments - UN's data.
Because women and girls represent half of the world’s population thus half of its potential. So, unless we close the gender gap and ensure equal opportunities for all, lots of this potential will remain unused, leading to a an unsustainable development. Some symptoms of this worldwide problems are, for example, sexual violence and exploitation, unequal division of unpaid care and domestic work, discrimination in public office.
