Key Considerations When Choosing DIN Rail Power Supply for Industrial Facilities

Advantages & Features

Markets & Applications

Choosing a power supply unit for an industrial plant has become a challenge due to various reasons including different power requirements of connected devices, input voltage compatibility based on geographical location, the supported temperature range, and derating considerations. This has compelled DIN Rail power supplies to have protection against overload, short circuits, overvoltage, and thermal issues. Additionally, the growing complexity in industrial manufacturing facilities and semiconductor fabrication plants has led to space constraints within the control cabinets. The traditional approach of using bulky power supply units to support components such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, relays, and actuators often results in space inefficiency issues. Many modern industrial applications today require DIN Rail power supplies, which are typically switch-mode power supply units designed to mount on a DIN Rail system — standardized metal rails used for installing industrial equipment inside racks or cabinets. These power units are suitable for space-constrained DIN panels, harsh operating conditions, applications with high peak power demand, and power reliability.

Authored by MEAN WELL Product Manager, Kai Li, and Sager Electronics Technical Support Manager for Power, Don Baldwin, this article discusses three key considerations when selecting a power supply unit for industrial environments: power requirements and peak loads, extreme conditions and temperature rating, and form factor and space constraints. The article will also explore the MEAN WELL XDR-E and XTR DIN Rail power supply series in addressing these requirements.
