Purpose

Black History month is not just about the past but it is about recognizing how black history shapes the present. - Honors Black individuals achievements, struggles, and contributions

Question?

How do you feel about black history month, and why would someone disagree with having one?

“Black history is American history”- Black History Month created because it was excluded from curriculum- Founded by Carter G. Woodson in 1926 it was called 'Negro History Week' "It was created to correct erasure, not to separate history" - Carter G. Woodson

"Black history includes pain, resilience, creativity and resistance."

1619-1865

Pain and oppression

1865-1954

Resistance during injustice

1920s-Now

Creativity through art, culture, and expression

1954-1968

Resistance against systemic oppression

Enslavement and resistance

  • Slavery was a violent and dehumanizing system
  • Everyday resistance from the enslaved was culture, faith, escape
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion (1831)
- Rebellion was short lived but lasting impact Nat Turner's story forces us to confront uncomfortable questions

Reconstruction and jim crow

* Reconstruction was supposed to bring equality* Jim Crow laws were enforced soon after * This shows how freedom without protection can be taken away just as easily as it is won * Despite these barriers, Black communities flourished

Civil rights movement

*Civil Rights movement challenged segragation and discrimination * There were so many different leaders but had the same end goal * This movement did not "fix" everything; it addresssed laws but not all systems

Ongoing struggles and systematic racism

  • Disparities in criminal justice, housing, employment, education and healthcare.
  • Systematic racism is still an ongoing issue in America
  • Black History Month highlights this for us

Black culture

  • Black culture has a huge influence on America
  • Many things we interact with comes from Black creativity

socialism within the black community

* Socialism in the Black history challenged capitalist exploitation, racial injustice, and economic inequality *Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Baker, and organizations like the Black Panther Party * Connected to Black liberation efforts with anti-capitalist and socialist ideals.

Question?

Considering the information given, people still do not believe that systematic racism exist and if there is, it is in other places around the world. Why is the concept of "systematic racism" denied or dismissed?

Why Should We Care?

Question? At what point could inclusion reach its objective, and when that time comes, would we do away with Black History Month? * Celebrating Black history means acknowledging the past while committing to a more informed and inclusive future * Ignoring Black history allows inequality for anyone and everyone to repeat itself
The courage, brilliance, and resilience of Black people is not just history to learn about in February. It is a call of action to every American.
