Science Rules!
I have always loved science, even since elementary school. In 6th grade, I was surprised to win an award for outstanding science student. I was surprised because it just seemed so natural to dive into the science world. I didn't think I needed special recognition for just doing what I loved. ' In college, I already knew science was my future. I earned a Bachelor's in Biology a the University of Mary Washington. When I decided to become a teacher, I returned for a Master's in Education. Now, I have taught Life Science for years and love every moment of sharing about ourselves and the organsisms around us from a microscopic viewpoint. My past students already know one of my favorite questions to ask - Why do we eat and why do we breathe? There's a specific reason. Join me in 7th Grade Life Science to find out!
VAVA Experience
I first started with VAVA in 2021 after I discovered my passion for virtual teaching when Hanover county created a virtual school due to the COVID in-person school shut down. Since working for VAVA as a Life Science teacher in the 7th-grade, I have also been Science Department Lead for several years, a National K12 Excellence in Teaching and Trailblazer award winner, and Science Club Sponser. My goal in the virtual envrioment is to create an interactive learning experience for students that goes beyond traditional classroom teaching strategies.
Mrs. Ensign
Greetings!
My name is Mrs. Ensign (N-sign). Living organisms have always been my passion, especially animal husbandry. I have experience caring for living organisms at both the Smithsonian Marine Exhibit in Florida and the National Zoo. It was a the Zoo that I decided to enter the field of education, and earned my Master's of Education at the University of Mary Washington. I started my own animal husbandry projects at home to fulfill that passion. You will definitely meet some of my critters as we explore Life Science in our virtual classroom! As of 2026, I have been an educator of science for 12 years total, with classroom experience in Richmond City, Henrico, and Hanover Counties. My virtual education journey started in Hanover County and has continued for 5 years now with VAVA.
Personal Zoo
Before becoming an educator, I wanted care for animals in captivity. I love the challenge of replicating natural environments and providing the best habitat possible. I have around 20 exotic animals in my care, plus two minature poodles and two small aquariums. Check out my instagram to see and explore my personal zoo!
Pac Man Frog
Named after a frog from the popular anime, Naruto, Gamatatsu is a unique organism in my collection. Pac Man frogs are native to tropical grasslands and marshes of South America (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay). Gamatatsu's genotype is for an albino coloration. In reptiles and amphibians, the albino phenotype is yellow with red eyes instead of the typical white with red eyes we see in mammals. In the wild, these frogs ambush and eat a variety of foods, even small mammals due to their giant mouth size!
