"Quando le mie figlie si sposeranno, il dottor Roylott dovrà lasciare loro in eredità 100.000 sterline" madre di Helen e Julia Stoner.

Julia, prima di morire, ha detto a sua sorella "la fascia... la fascia maculata!". Helen, poco prima, aveva sentito un rumore metallico e un sibilo.
"Venni spostata nella camera di mia sorella dopo la sua morte, e la prima notte sentii ciò che disse mia sorella: un rumore metallico e un sibilo, ne rimasi paralizzata, dopodiché mi sono precipitata da voi. Zzz... alcuni si erano addormentati, ma li svegliammo e rispondemmo: "Il vostro corpo è al sicuro con noi, e non si preoccupi per i soldi, non ne abbiamo bisogno" Oltre a noi, nessuno non voleva soldi, anzi, volevano pagamento anticipato. "Non vi vergognate? Non sapete che un investigatore fa il suo lavoro solo per divertimento?" Ecco perché, con o senza soldi, ora siamo a questo punto.
DDecidiamo di passare la notte nella stanza di Helen per capire cosa sia successo a Julia. La sera sentiamo un rumore metallico e un sibilo uno di noi tappa il buco di aerazione e si sente dall'altra stanza un grido di dolore. Chiediamo al nostro amico se ha visto cos'era e ha detto che dal buco era arrivato un serpente.
