Secret Sea Creature Guide: The Octopus Family

Welcome, ocean explorer! If you are reading this, you have found the scroll of secret information in the bottle along with the underwater camera! Within this guide, there are many fascinating creatures to discover, but this one is a surprise you will not expect. Hidden deep beneath the waves, the Octopus Family Living Room remains a mystery that few humans have ever seen. Long ago, a removal van was tossed from a ship in a storm and it sank to the sandy ocean floor. Nearby octopuses were somehow able to drag every armchair, sofa and lamp from the wreckage and arrange them into the cosiest sitting room!

These remarkable eight-armed sea creatures have an unusual appearance. This octopus family slouch comfortably into their surroundings. Sprawled across padded cushions, eight gangly tentacles writhe around with minds of their own. Three little hatchlings wait with eager eyes that gleam like polished shells. The family’s shifting colours are a swirl of pearly blue with spots of seaweed green.

To attract their prey, the whole household works together to create a calm and inviting space. The biggest octopus reads a story from a sunken book while the three tiny youngsters perch on the footstool to listen. Rather cleverly, the octopus family organise for two patient anglerfish to dangle their glowing lights. With the lamps lit for storytelling, shoals of fish and smaller creatures arrive and huddle across the sofa. All seems cosy and calm… until the rush of forty tentacles snaffle fish, plankton and crabs into eager beaks.

This specially arranged room is where the octopus family lives. Underneath the furniture, the seabed is carpeted with crumbly sand. Sofas are anchored by coral bricks and armchairs lean against rocks. Their coffee table rests neatly on a patch of soft sponge. Overhead, gentle currents carry seaweed that sways like curtains in a watery breeze. Beyond the cosy lamplight, the vast ocean is dark and wild. They are hidden from view amongst the enclosed coral bed. The sunken removal van provides a perfect escape for whenever danger approaches.

The most astonishing thing of all is their talent for camouflage. With a single thought, these marvellous molluscs can match their surroundings, so what appears to look like a sofa cushion might be a blinking eye! If you ever explore a shipwreck, beware… an inviting underwater living room scene might not be what it seems.
