The best way to practise a language
Nu-SkiLL is an application developed by Nantes Université, based on an open-source platform originating from the ULEP (University Language Exchange Programme) of the University of Lorraine. It enables participants to be connected for language exchanges, particularly in the form of virtual tandems.
What is Nu-SkiLL for? Nu-SkiLL is designed to facilitate and structure tandem language exchanges, especially online, between participants from Nantes Université and partner institutions.

The Best Way to Practise a Language
The application allows:
- Connecting participants who wish to practise one or more languages, based on the principle of reciprocal exchange (each participant is both a learner and a resource).
- Developing oral and written language skills in an informal but structured setting, complementary to formal courses.
- Creating virtual tandems, making exchanges possible regardless of geographical location.
- Supporting the internationalisation of study programmes by encouraging linguistic and intercultural interaction without physical mobility.

Profile creation
Personal information required to log into the tool and create an e-Tandem profile:
Refine interests
We would like to avoid having 90% of your student database sharing the same interests (sports, travel, cinema and music). We suggest further differentiating these broad categories so that the user profile is more interesting.
A bit more fun and more personal
To start conversations with the e-tandem after a “match”, language partners can see their correspondent’s answers to three everyday life questions.
These answers are represented by an icon and integrated into the correspondent’s profile.

A Student’s Ministerial-Level Schedule
The student can choose when they are available for exchanges with their partner using the calendar integrated into the application.
Providing a breather in the journey
When a path is more extensive, we like to include moments of pause to signal to users that they are moving forward and that a significant part of the inspiration phase is now behind them. Let’s head to the next step!
Language selection
Quick and user-friendly, the language selection leads directly to the level assessment. We can leverage the user's choice to personalize the transition screens with a few words in the target language they wish to study.
Empowering the learner
Our level assessment follows the sector's best UX practices. It starts with an initial student self-diagnosis, complemented by a rapid verification process consisting of a few targeted exercises.
Educational wait times. We treat waiting periods as informative and didactic touchpoints. Furthermore, we intend to script the 'tandem' announcement to turn this match-making moment into a unique and standout experience.

The chat interface incorporates all the ergonomic features of industry leaders (WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage, etc.).
Emojis, files, images—everything needed to foster full expression.
Note-taking feature
We integrated a notepad block within the right-hand sidebar. This allows learners to stay engaged with the conversation while quickly capturing notes or revisiting past entries to retrieve key information from previous sessions.

The application is fully responsive. We have designed a mobile-friendly version of the desktop interface that maintains the exact same range of features. Whether on a computer or a mobile device, users have access to the same functionalities.

We are designing a feed that prioritizes upcoming e-tandem appointments. To maintain momentum, the interface proactively prompts users to schedule their next session if their calendar is empty.
A touch of gamification
To enhance learner motivation, we plan to integrate a badge-based reward system. These digital credentials will be unlocked according to the user's progress and interaction frequency, encouraging long-term retention.
