AMC Movie Theater
In my opinion, the AMC here in Normal is a great community asset. The ability to bring people together in the way that film can is a great privlege. Also, they do many deals for movie nights and the theater in Normal is quiet affordable, compared to other urban areas. A form of advocacy I could see happening here is a theater rent out, and a community organization having a movie night for families who may not be able to afford a movie night out with their kids. Community is really important, and I could see this being a hub to bring people together
Christ Church
Although I myself and many people do not attend church, churches can be hubs for communities to come together and contribute to people from all types of backgrounds. Christ Church also regularly does food drives for their community food bank, which is useful for those in the community that lack access to adequate resources.I think, in the past, the church has been a community pillar, however, this has faded throughout the years.
Rosa Parks Community Park
Community parks are a great place for advocacy. I think a park is a gathering place for many people. In my own experience, many public protests have started in public parks and expanded. Another way I think about a park as a resource is for people who are homeless. Public parks offer restrooms, shelter, and occasionally showers and outlets. Growing up in an urban area, this was a particularly important part of Chicago resources for the unhoused.
Normal Public Library
The NPL is one of, if not the most important community assets we have here. Recently renovated, the library offers a variety of new services, such as children's craft groups, yoga, and social. Although, ostensibly, the use of public libraries is dying, it is an important community hub that inspires learning and community. THIS is a place where I could see advocacy happening. In terms of knowledge growth, I have attached a link for some of the upcoming commmunity centered events. https://www.normalpl.org/events/month
Connect Transit
Within itself, the public transit system here in Normal is an amazing community asset. While it is not as comprehensive as other major cities, its coverage is adequate in comparison to its' budget. I mysef am a frequent user, and it has taken me to pick up groceries, attend classes, and make my clinical experiences possible. Honestly, I have made personal connections with many people that are also regular riders, including the bus drivers.
Midwest Foodbank
The Midwest food bank is a place I could really see advocacy for people with litte resources happening. They provide food to people all across America from right here in Normal. I could see adovcacy happening in terms of rallying our community to provide food and hunger relief, by donation drives and other means of donation. They work year round, but also contribute to disaster relief in times of need. I provided a link to their mission statemet and which gives more inforamtion as to how to volunteer. https://midwestfoodbank.org/what-we-do/
Constitution Trail
The constitution trail is a public access walking trail here in Normal. For me, this is a great community asset. Many people do not have access to places for exercise, fresh air, or even a place where they can safely enjoy the outside. Access to the trail is massive for many people, to enjoy eachothers company, and even acts as a safe way for people to walk to and from different locations. It is also largely accessiible by wheelchair and other modes of devices for those with disability.
Children's Discovery Center
The CDC offers a lot for local youth. On top of being a museum, children have access to programs for STEM interests, and in some ways, it can act as child care. They also do weekly activities for children and offer discounts based on income. I have included a link on their STEAM program, which I find really interesting for kids who have interest in the topic, or even interest in a future career.https://www.childrensdiscoverymuseum.net/158/Innovation-Station
Public Art Display
II would really love to see a public art display somewhere in uptown station. It is so drab and unwelcoming. As it is the first thing many people may see when entering Normal by train or bus, it would be awesome to see something that represents the community here. I could see a community art project in which students from local schools and ISU came together to create a mural that represents the community in anyway, and included some landmarks of Bloomington-Normal
