Obligation and Prohibitions

  • “must” (deber) allows us to say what we are obliged to do.
  • “mustn’t / must not” (no deber) allows us to say what is prohibited to do.
  • We use MUST and MUSTN’T to talk about rules and obligations.

Examples: I must do my homework - debo hacer la tarea You must put your toothpast in a special box - debes meter la pasta de dientes en una caja especial I must not eat in class - no debo comer en clase You mustn't give food to animals - no debes dar comida a los animales

CAN/ CAN´T

  • “can” (poder) allows us to say what we are able to do.
  • “can’t / cannot” (no poder) allows us to say what we are not able to do.
  • We also use CAN and CAN’T to talk about something that is or isn't possible.
  • In questions, CAN allows us to ask for permission.
