Whether that’s a drama about a distant galaxy or a sitcom about a funny family, they all begin with the imagination of the screenwriter. It’s their job to put those ideas on paper, transforming a blank page into a scintillating script.

A script is a lot more than just lines of dialogue for actors to memorise. A vivid imagination and being able to describe what you’re thinking in detail is key. As a screenwriter, it’s your job to craft an engaging plot, write memorable characters and create striking settings – all of which require lots of drafting and background research. Because you are effectively writing a filmed play, you will also need to write ‘action lines’ for the actors, which are suggestions for how they could perform the scene. These instructions also guide the director and film crew on how to translate your words from page to screen.
