Be a Forest Scientist

If you love exploring woods and parks whatever the weather, enjoy science lessons, and have the curiosity to spot patterns and notice changes in the natural world, then a future as a forest scientist could be waiting for you. To thrive in this field, you will need to be observant, patient and resilient and above all, care deeply about our planet and all its inhabitants. Forest scientists are careful researchers who notice small changes in ecosystems and think deeply about how everything in nature is connected. They are thoughtful problem-solvers, confident using technology and data, and passionate about protecting the natural world. This job is not just about studying trees. It is about safeguarding the future of our planet.

Study the World’s Green Spaces

Forest scientists are securing the healthy future of our wooded areas, protecting biodiversity (the variety of animal and plant life in the world) and finding natural ways to fight climate change. Their research is used by governments and other decision-makers to manage our natural resources responsibly. That means not cutting down too many trees and ensuring new ones are planted. Your day-to-day job would be studying forests and unravelling the relationships between plants, trees, animals, and their surroundings. You will be someone who loves nature and the outdoors, and enjoy combining different scientific areas, such as ecology, biology, and environmental science.

The Technology of Trees

Forest scientists use various tools and advanced technologies to conduct their research – like LiDAR, a light detection sensor that creates detailed 3D maps of forests. They might take tree samples to analyse the rings in a tree trunk and figure out climate patterns of the past, and they will use statistical models to make sense of the data they collect.

Into the Woods

Much of your scientific life will take place in the tranquillity of nature. One day you might be exploring trails festooned with moss; the next, you could be heading off into unexplored forests to carry out ground-breaking research. Some of your time will also be spent computer modelling in an office or a lab. But wherever you’re working, you’ll be connecting with nature while contributing to global conservation efforts.

Did You Know?

Forests cover over 30 per cent of the Earth’s land surface and provide a home for a staggering 80 per cent of all terrestrial species on our planet. Trees also do the important job of keeping our air clean of carbon. We need them now more than ever!
