Mish takes a step closer,my arm stays high. I should trust him, he’s my cousin, was once my best friend. We were inseparable until fourteen moons ago when he was chosen for the hunt instead of me. I swallow the jealous pang that rises up my throat. I’m better with a spear, faster, stronger, less likely to trip over my own feet. Unlike him, lumbering and awkward. It wasn’t fair. Mish knew joining the hunt was all I dreamed of. But still he argued that he should go instead, that I was better off at home.

That if I went, wouldn’t Solas just follow us and we would slow the group, put everyone at risk, put Solas at risk, and so the prophecy too? Barik had agreed. So had my father.

Please, Fia, stop being so stubborn. Just listen to me. The hunt has returned and we found no trace of the herds, only a few fish that will last a day, two at most. The elders are saying Solas must be taken, that it’s foolishness now to keep her alive when we are all slowly starving.

I lower my arm and drop the stick. Run my hand down Solas’ back. She’s still, watching Mish. I wonder if she understands the danger she’s in.

A) How can you tell that the relationship between Fia and Mish is strained?

Reveal Explainer

When Mish approaches and takes a step towards Solas, Fia is not welcoming. Instead, she keeps her arm raised to protect Solas, as if she expects a threat. If their relationship was close or trusting, she would have moved towards Mish or greeted him warmly after her returned from the hunt. Her defensive actions show the tension and strain between them.
