La relación de Bernardo de Gálvez con Estados Unidos cuenta que fue uno de los principales apoyos extranjeros durante su Guerra de Independencia (1775-1783). Durante ese tiempo, las 13 colonias estaban luchando contra Reino Unido para convertirse en un país independiente. España no quería que Reino Unido se hiciera más fuerte, así que decidió ayudar a los colonos. Gálvez, que era gobernador de Luisiana, fue quien organizó esa ayuda. Gracias a sus victorias, ayudó a que Estados Unidos consiguiera sus independencia. Por eso lo consideran un héroe.
