Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is not just the right thing to do, it’s essential for sustainable development.Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and therefore also half of its potential. But gender inequality persists everywhere and stagnates social progress. There has been progress over the last decades, but the world is not on track to achieve gender equality by 2030.

The suffragette movement included women of great charisma and courage , among them in particular twoEnglish activists, who with their example triggered epochal changes:

In the past, the term Suffragette referred to women who were members of a women's emancipation movement that fought for the right to vote . Currently, this word is used to refer to any woman who fought to gain her rights . Between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries , the desire to obtain the same rights as men began to spread among women.

  • Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928), one of the most important suffragettes and early activists of the 19th century, founder of the Women's Social and Political Union , the organization promoting women's suffrage in the United Kingdom. She dedicated her life to the cause of spreading and raising awareness of women's right to vote.
  • Emily Wilding Davison (1872-1913), her name is linked to a dramatic episode , as reconstructed by Il Secolo XIX : it was June 4, 1913 when the activist entered the track during the Epsom Derby with the aim of attaching the purple-white-green flag of the Women's Social and Political Union to the bridle of the King's horse, as a sign of protest against the sovereign, who continued to order the arrests of activists.

The condition of women in the Italian labour market, as we know well, is marked by a profound gap compared to that of men: significant differences are recorded, particularly negative if compared to those of the rest of Europe, with regards to their presence in the labour market, their salary treatment, and their career development prospects. The CNEL – ISTAT 2025 report clarifies that the female employment rate is 12.6 points lower than the EU average and is the lowest value among the 27 countries of the Union.

Throughout history, religions have often been interpreted in ways that highlight only the masculine perspective. In monotheistic traditions, discussions about gender differences have led to two main points. First, these differences have frequently been used to construct a supposed “knowledge” about women that has justified the masculinization of institutions and various forms of discrimination. Second, contemporary theology emphasizes that understanding how male and female identities are socially and culturally shaped — and addressing issues such as discrimination, social roles, and women’s emancipation — requires acknowledging the specific differences between genders.
