This artwork was an Greek marble piece which dated back to the classical peroid. These pieces of artwork were most known to be produced in Athens. The sculptors who created these pieces of art were working under the state or relgion. They depict mythological battles. The acient Greeks had high value on balance, self control, and order. The Centauromachy was a more popular theme because it showed the victory over the centaurs and basically made the people feel empowered. It functions as both decorative and ideological purposes.

The subject of this artwork is a mythological battle between a human and a centaur. The centaur was mainly associated with lack of self control and violence, and the human shows order and calmness. The artwork shows the struggle between the human and the centaur. This is not a piece of a specific event in Greek mythologoly. The Centauromachy was very popular during the Classical peroid because it showed the Greeks priorites. The people understood this piece as a moral lesson.
Style
The form and anatomy of this piece was that the figures were idealized, with attention to the proportion. The composition of it is that the figures were tighly fit and that created a sense of balance even though it was a violent action being depicted. The depth of this piece was high relief which means the figures were projected from the background. The lines and texture are very smooth and has flowing lines that show the centaur and humans proportions correctly and their is slight texture differences as well. The diamesion was 3 dimensionality even though it was carved into a flat slab of stone. Finishing it up with the medium of it, it was carved from marble which was a favorite from the Greeks.
