Context

The Parthenon Sculptures were made during the time from 447 BC to 438 BC in Athens, which is now part of modern-day Greece. This artwork was produced during the golden age of Athens. The golden age of Athens was truly maginifenct it was marked in this way due to Athens adopting democracy into their politics, military might, and cultural growth. The artwork was made by a Greek sculptor and medallist known as Pheidias. The Athenian Democracy commissioned the sculptures to glorify the city of Athens and celebrate Athens' heritage. The Patheron itself was gifted to a Athena temple.

Subject

The Parthenon represents a wide range of symbols, figures of their culture, and scenes from Greek mythology. Rather than focusing on just one historic moment or person, the artwork takes into account the values and beliefs of ancient Athens. However, the main focus in this image is the battle between the Centaurs and the Lapiths at the wedding of Peirithous. The story is that at the feast, the Centaurs became too drunk and tried to kidnap the Lapith women, leading to a violent conflict. The depiction of this fight is good vs. evil or the struggles between civilization and barbarism, some might take it to be like in the STANDARD OF ARTISTIC GOODNESS it speaks on what makes a good man. The scene the artwork depicts is a Centaur standing over a defeated Lapith warrior in victory. This scene depicts the power of the Centaurs and the Greek power. Depictions on the left side of the centaur are what appear to be an animal's skin, which symbolizes the strength and violence they can inflict. The body types of both characters appear to be very masculine and god-like at the time of creation.

Style

The Marble Metope from the Parthenon South Metope XXVIII is created in the High Classical Greek Style. This style of artwork domainted Athen during the mid-fifth century BC. The style is known for its emphasis on the balance of natural movements and harmonious movements. Artists in this time frame of Athes likes to depict the human body in a realistic yet perfect way in artwork. This artwork piece was formed in high relief, which brings out the artwork from the backgorounf giving it that realistic three dimensional quilty look. The battle scene looks heavily focused on this way,y with the characters popping out. Despite the violence of the scenne the chartes boodies remain controlled and even aesthetically pleasing to the human eye. You can clearly see the strength of the Centaur with his raised posture and the extended arm with the animal skin. The Lapith's body is twisted with a bent leg, showing the struggle and collapse of his strength. Although part of the piece is now missing, you can still see the strength in the artwork.
