billions to over 10 trillion years
Formation: form from contracting clouds of dust and gas. However, their lower mass means they take longer to ignite hydrogen fusion in their cores, resulting in a much slower, more prolonged birth process. Main Sequence Phase (100 Billion to >10 Trillion Years): This is the longest phase. Because they are fully convective, they mix hydrogen throughout the entire star, allowing them to burn nearly all their fuel. They are very dim and stable (smaller stars live longer). Blue Dwarf Phase: the star contracts and its temperature increases, making it smaller and hotter becoming a blue dwarf. White Dwarf Phase : the star stops nuclear fusion, becomes degenerate, and cools down over trillions of years, transitioning into a white dwarf. Black Dwarf Phase: Eventually, the white dwarf will cool completely, becoming a cold, invisible black dwarf.
