What was its function or importance in the past?:It was mainly used as a Catholic temple and a central place for worship and national events.
2. Today (Present Day)
Today, Notre Dame is still standing and is being restored after the big fire in 2019 that damaged the roof and the spire. It is not a ruin. It is being carefully repaired to look like before. It continues to be an active cathedral and also a tourist attraction. Millions of visitors come every year to admire its architecture, stained-glass windows, and history. It is still very important for French culture and religion.
3. Fun Fact
A fun fact is that inside Notre Dame there are strange stone creatures called gargoyles. They are not only decorative — they were designed to drain rainwater away from the walls. Also, the famous novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” by Victor Hugo helped save the cathedral, because it made people care about protecting it.
