The legend of St. Patrick

St. Patrick is one of the most famous patron saints of Ireland: according to legend, he brought Christianity to the island, made clover fashionable and freed Ireland from snakes.March 17 marks the death of Saint Patrick and has been considered a religious holiday in Ireland for over 1500 years.

Thank you for the holiday !

Ireland officially started celebrating this day in 1903.

The patron saint formerly known as Maewyn

St. Patrick is not the name of an Irishman named Patrick: born Maewyn Succat, the Irish patron saint was actually British.According to the legend, he was sold as a slave in Ireland. Then, as a teenager, he became religious, before escaping and returning to England. He then became a priest named Patrick and began to convert all the Irish Celtic pagans to Christianity.

The popularity of clubs

The story tells that Saint Patrick used clovers to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. The Celts believed that each leaf of the clover represented something, so the use of the clover as teaching material was fruitful. St. Patrick established several churches, schools and monasteries and made shamrock popular in the country.

Green has become the new blue

Even if everyone turns green, Patrick actually preferred the blue one to him and you just have to look at an old Irish flag for proof. It was during the Irish rebellion of 1798 that the shamrock and the color green became symbols of nationalism.

Let’s march!

Besides drinking and wearing green, watching or parades is a "must" to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Curiously, the biggest St. Patrick’s parades are held outside of Ireland as Irish expatriate communities around the world take the festivities very seriously.
