United States Department of Justice

The DOJ enforces federal laws that protect against discrimination based on race, color, national origin, disability status, sex, religion, and familial status. It is responsible for prosecuting violations of federal hate crime laws.

The FBI is the lead investigative agency for criminal violations of federal civil rights statutes. The Bureau works closely with its local, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement partners around the country in many of these cases. Law enforcement support The FBI works closely with state, local, tribal authorities on investigations, even when federal charges are not brought. FBI resources, forensic expertise, and experience in identification and proof of hate-based motivations often provide an invaluable complement to local law enforcement.

United Against Hate Initiative

In 2023, the Department of Justice launched a nationwide initiative to combat unlawful acts of hate. United Against Hate connects federal, state, and local law enforcement partners with communities in order to build trust, educate people about hate crimes, and encourage reporting of hate crimes and incidents.
