Transparency
The quality that allows light to pass through watercolor layers, showing the paper beneath.
Diffused
Describes light, color, or edges that appear gentle, hazy, or blurred—like sunlight through clouds or a shadow with soft edges.
Hot pressed (HP)
Watercolor paper that has been pressed under heat during manufacturing, giving it a smooth, flat surface with minimal texture. Ideal for detailed work and fine lines.
flat wash
Covering an area with a smooth, even layer of one consistent color or value, without streaks or variations.
Wet-on-wet
Painting onto wet paper (or into wet paint), which causes colors to flow, blend, and create soft, diffused edges.
gradient wash
A wash that gradually changes in value or intensity, usually going from dark to light (or saturated to diluted) across the painted area.
Sgraffito
Scratching into wet paint to create lines or texture.
resist
Using wax or masking fluid to block paint from certain areas.
Bloom/Backrun
Uncontrolled spreading of wet paint into a damp area, creating a blossom effect.
Cold Pressed (CP)
Watercolor paper that has been pressed less, resulting in a slightly textured surface (often called “medium texture”). It holds washes well and is versatile for both detail and broader strokes.
Lifting
Removing pigment from the paper with a brush, sponge, or tissue.
glazing
Applying a thin, transparent layer of watercolor over a dry layer to adjust the color, deepen value, or create a luminous effect.
