The preliminary work

We cannot deny the help of the senior ambassadors who accompanied us in discerning the best sources of information. We have discovered the complexity of the problem. And everything that being a well-informed and active citizen in the European Union can do to help us.

We have discovered the fascinating world of architecture and sustainable urban planning.

Before we started writing, we asked ourselves questions and looked for a lot of information.

Then we chose the theme and housing seemed the closest to us.

Then, with the help of the ambassador team, we thought about the ideas we already had.

propuestas

  • Housing for the immediate future must be practical, but not large.
  • It must be complete, but not luxurious.
  • We must consider the differences between young people living in urban areas and those living in rural areas.
  • Housing will be sustainable and designed to promote energy self-sufficiency and strengthen local ties.
  • Urban planners, architects, and the government must focus on the restoration, adaptation, and transformation of existing buildings.
  • The cost of renovated or new housing must be affordable for young people, avoiding speculation.
  • Any measure must always strive for sustainability in its broadest sense.

Between 2015 and 2024, housing prices in the EU increased by an average of

53 %

The housing crisis disproportionately affects young people in the European Union, with 26.5% living in co-rental accommodation and nearly 10% spending more than 40% of their income on housing.

This study has introduced us to, or allowed us to learn more about, many European institutions:

And of course the UN and the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda.

One idea that worries us is the profound differences between the data, the realities, and perhaps the mentalities between Northern and Mediterranean Europe.
Eurostat is a great tool for getting to know the European Union better.
