Le terme féodal évoque une société du Moyen-Âge basée sur les relations de vassalité et de suzeraineté. Le système féodal est un système hiérarchique : les seigneurs commandent aux vassaux qui dominent eux-mêmes les paysans. Le roi est le suzerain suprême. Pour résumer, le seigneur jure fidélité au roi et reçoit en échange un pouvoir local et des terres. Le paysan (appelé serf), jure quant à lui fidélité à un seigneur : il gagne la protection de celui-ci et peut cultiver ses terres mais doit en contrepartie payer des taxes.

Au Moyen-Age, la société est divisée en trois groupes: les religieux qui prient, les seigneurs et les chevaliers qui combattent et les travailleurs (les artisans, les commerçants et les paysans). LES PAYSANS La vie des paysans Les paysans, aussi appelés « vilains », vivent dans des villages serrés autour de leur église et proches de la maison du seigneur. Le foyer éclaire et chauffe tant bien que mal l’unique pièce dont le sol est en terre battue.
